Arroyos and swimming pools
Alessandro Heights is a secluded upscale Riverside suburb located in the rugged San Bernardino Mountain foothills about 6 miles south of the city center. Writer Helen Hunt Jackson made the Riverside area famous as the setting of her 1884 novel Ramona, and this suburb is named for the title character’s husband, Alessandro. “It’s a newer neighborhood with more recently built homes,” says Realtor Brian Hopkins, co-founder of Power of 2 Realty, a Riverside resident who has been working in real estate for five years. “It’s filled with orange groves, just like Arlington Heights next door.”

Mission revivals and Spanish estates
Modern residential development began in the 1980s and continues to the present. Mission Revival-style homes with clay-tiled rooftops, stucco siding, and arched windows and doorways are the most common style here, but there are also some ranch and Colonial Revival homes. Many homes have backyard swimming pools where residents cool off in the summer heat. Others feature views of natural scenery and distant mountains from their windows. Prices can range anywhere from $700,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home to around $1 million for homes upwards of 4,000 square feet on 3-acre lots. Grand luxury estates also exist here and can list for more than $2 million.
