Slatterly Park
Early 20th century homes with natural woodwork
"In Slatterly Park, you're going to find some of the older homes we have in town," says Kristina Rist, a Realtor with Keller Williams Premier Realty and Rochester local. "There's natural woodwork, old charm, and it's closer to the city center," she adds, noting that some Mayo Clinic commuters even bike to work in the morning. Prospective buyers will find bungalows, cottages and ranch-style houses dating back to the 1930s, '40s and '50s, although a few properties are even older, built around 1900. Prices typically start under $200,000 for investment opportunities, whereas updated homes range from around $230,000 to $330,000. Streets are gridded, quiet and sidewalk-lined, and long, narrow driveways are shaded by tall oak trees.A large-scale food hall and all-day breakfast
"Near Slats, I would say The Workshop is a go-to restaurant. It's a bunch of different ones in a huge space," says Rist. There's also Birdie's, known for its chicken and waffles, Julio's Tacos and Reid's Pizza. The food hall and bar also hosts weekly events like trivia night, bingo and karaoke on Fridays. Brothers Bar & Grill along Broadway Avenue, meanwhile, is one of the only restaurants in Rochester that serves breakfast all day. Although they typically take a break from hosting live music in the summer, there's a regular lineup of blues bands in the fall, winter and spring. Grocery shoppers can cross Bear Creek to reach Cub Foods on 15th Avenue, and 12th Street is lined with fast food joints like KFC and small convenience stores. It also doesn't take long to reach popular downtown Rochester restaurants; Rist recommends Bleu Duck for special occasions.Disc Golf, a network of paved trails and playgrounds
In the neighborhood's namesake park, located next to Bear Creek, picnic shelters host family reunions and barbecues. On warm days, residents can head to the 9-hole Disc Golf course, play sand volleyball or stop by the playground. A pedestrian bridge arches over the creek, connecting Slatterly Park to a larger network of paved walking and biking trails, which lead to other parks like Mayo Memorial and Silver Lake. "They're connected to almost everywhere throughout the city," says Rist, and Rochester has plans to add even more mileage in the coming years. To the west of the neighborhood, Soldier's Field Golf Course is open to the public, and there's also a seasonal ice rink, a swimming pool and "Field of Fun," a playground with wooden turrets, corn-themed climbing structures and sand play.Summertime festivals, markets and outdoor music series
The city of Rochester, with the support of the Mayo Clinic, schedules community events like Thursdays Downtown—formerly called Thursdays on 1st—in June, July and August and Social-ICE in the winter. In Med City, summer means weekly outdoor concerts: there's the Riverside Music Series on Sunday nights in Mayo Park, FORWARD Park Concerts in select neighborhoods throughout the city and Sidewalk Sessions in Peace Plaza around lunchtime. All are free and open to the public, and locals pack picnic coolers, blankets and folding chairs to set up in the grass. On Saturdays, shop for fresh produce at the Rochester Farmers Market near the Olmsted County Fairgrounds. Tribute bands and comedians perform year-round at the Mayo Civic Center, which is connected to the contemporary exhibit halls in the Rochester Art Center. Air Insanity is a trampoline park popular for birthday parties, and adults prefer Old School Arcade and Axe Throwing on 9th Street.Partnerships with Mayo and IBM through the P-TECH Program
Slatterly Park students are districted for Rochester Public Schools like Riverside Central Elementary and Willow Creek Middle, both of which earn a C-plus on Niche. Mayo High School, meanwhile, has an A-minus grade and community partnerships with large-scale employers like the Mayo Clinic and IBM. Students can seek mentorship and internship opportunities, and there are also Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) for students interested in receiving high school and college credits at the same time and tuition-free.Bikes and buses into downtown Rochester, the Twin Cities 90 miles away
According to Rist, Slatterly Park's desirability can, in part, be boiled down to its convenience. "You can get almost anywhere within this town in 15 to 20 minutes. Anything you need is gonna be a short trip away," she says. Many hospital employees will bike — or sometimes walk — to work in the morning, and Rochester Public Transit operates on a regular schedule, stopping twice every hour along major neighborhood thoroughfares like 3rd Avenue and 4th Street. Downtown, underground pedestrian tunnels called subways and above-ground skyways connect hospital buildings, which Rist says is helpful for staying warm during Rochester's winters when temperatures sometimes drop below zero. Just over 8 miles from Slatterly Park, residents can fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul or Chicago from the Rochester International Airport. Driving to the Twin Cities—both around 90 miles away—takes about an hour and a half along U.S. Highway 52, depending on traffic.
