Rowland continues to build on its history as "Little Tapei"

Nicknamed “Little Taipei” in the 1980s due to an influx of Taiwanese immigrants, the unincorporated San Gabriel Valley suburb of Rowland (also known as Rowland Heights) is now home to some of the best East Asian eateries in Southern California. With great public schools and lots of large parks, Rowland is a family-friendly community, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.

Wide range of home sizes and styles, including some gated communities

Along Rowland's wide residential streets, often lined with sidewalks, streetlights and palm trees, single-family homes range from $545,000 to $4 million, though most hover around $900,000; you'll commonly see contemporary Spanish- and midcentury ranch-style houses, as well as some Craftsman-style bungalows. Larger homes sit higher up in the valley, often in private, gated communities that offer far-reaching views of the city below. Smaller homes sit near Colima Road and Nogales Street, the neighborhood's main arteries.

Local restaurants serve different kinds of East Asian cuisine

Throughout Rowland, there are busy shopping centers like Mandarin Plaza, which is stocked with locally owned stores and eateries, many with signage in Chinese or Spanish. Thanks to East Asian-born or -raised residents hankering for authentic dishes, Rowland is famous for dishes like Japanese ramen, Chinese hotpot, Korean barbeque and more. Dun Huang is especially beloved for its authentic northwest Chinese cuisine; chefs here work behind a glass window where they create crowd-pleasing dishes like their signature Lanzhou beef noodles, combining hot, fragrant broth, perfectly cooked vegetables, tender slices of beef and freshly hand-pulled noodles. Local shopping centers often include large Asian-chain grocery stores like 99 Ranch Market. There's Whole Foods, Ralphs, Costco and Walmart outside the neighborhood.

Sprawling parks, a children's museum and a 27-hole golf course

Local green space includes 575-acre Schabarum Regional Park, home to hiking and equestrian trails, public tennis courts, and around 500 cherry blossom trees gifted by the Japanese town of Kairaku-en. At the 10-acre Gloria Heer Park, locals enjoy leafy, sun-dappled walking paths, barbecue grills and a shaded playground. There's nearby entertainment for little ones at The Children’s Museum at La Habra, where exhibits include a farm, a STEAM lab, and a nature walk studded with taxidermized animals from various global wildlife zones. Royal Vista Golf Club has a semi-private 27-hole course with wide-open fairways and a Spanish-style clubhouse with a bar and grill.

Rowland Unified School District serves local students

Many local kids attend Rowland Unified District schools like Blandford Elementary and Alvarado Intermediate, both rated 7/10 by GreatSchools; at the latter, students can perform in the drumline, join the Art Club or compete in the Science Olympiad. The 8/10-rated Rowland High offers 22 varsity sports and the International Baccalaureate program.

About 30 miles from Los Angeles, close to major employers

Sitting roughly 30 miles east of Los Angeles, Rowland is accessible by several major freeways. Many locals work at major companies like Newegg, Fashion Nova and DIRECTV, headquartered just 6 miles away in the City of Industry.
