Suburban Neighborhood in Rowland Heights, California
Los Angeles County 91748, 91789
Nicknamed “Little Taipei” in the 1980s due to an influx of Taiwanese immigrants, the unincorporated San Gabriel Valley suburb of Rowland (also known as Rowland Heights) is today home to some of the best East Asian eateries in Southern California. Sitting roughly 30 miles east of Los Angeles, family-friendly Rowland is accessible by several major freeways, making area commuting a snap; many locals work at major companies like Newegg, Fashion Nova and DIRECTV, headquartered just 6 miles away in the City of Industry.
Along Rowland's wide residential streets, often lined with sidewalks, streetlights and palm trees, single-family homes range from $545,000 to $4 million, most hovering around $900,000; you'll commonly see contemporary Spanish- and midcentury ranch-style houses, as well as some Craftsman-style bungalows. Larger homes sit higher up in the valley, most in private, gated communities that offer far-reaching views of the city below. Smaller homes sit near Colima Road and Nogales Street, the neighborhood's main arteries.
Throughout Rowland you'll find busy shopping centers like Mandarin Plaza, stocked with locally owned stores and eateries, many with signage in Chinese or Spanish. Thanks to East Asian-born or -raised residents hankering for authentic dishes, Rowland is famous for food like Japanese ramen, Chinese hotpot, Korean barbeque and more. Dun Huang is especially beloved for its authentic northwest Chinese cuisine; chefs here work behind a glass window where you can watch them create crowd-pleasing dishes like their signature Lanzhou beef noodles, combining hot, fragrant broth, perfectly cooked vegetables, tender slices of beef and freshly hand-pulled noodles. Local shopping centers often include large Asian-chain grocery stores like 99 Ranch Market, where you can pick up local produce, meat and seafood, as well as well-known products from throughout East Asia. Just outside the neighborhood you'll find Whole Foods, Ralphs, Costco and Walmart.
Local green space includes 575-acre Schabarum Regional Park, home to hiking and equestrian trails, public tennis courts, and around 500 cherry blossom trees gifted by the Japanese town of Kairaku-en; and 10-acre Gloria Heer Park, where you can enjoy leafy, sun-dappled walking paths, play some baseball, host a barbeque or simply relax as your favorite kids burn off energy on the shaded playground. You'll find more nearby entertainment for little ones at The Children’s Museum at La Habra, where exhibits include a farm, a STEAM lab, and a nature walk studded with taxidermized animals from various global wildlife zones. If golf is your game, check out the semi-private Royal Vista Golf Club's 27-hole course, wide-open fairways and Spanish-style clubhouse with a bar and grill.
Many local kids attend Rowland Unified district schools like Blandford Elementary (K-6) and Alvarado Intermediate (7-8), both rated 7/10 by GreatSchools; at the latter, students can perform in the drumline, join the Art Club or compete in the Science Olympiad. The 8/10-rated Rowland High (go, Raiders!) offers 22 varsity sports and the International Baccalaureate program.
For a family-friendly neighborhood with great public schools and a delicious taste of East Asia, head 30 miles east of LA to the San Gabriel Valley suburb of Rowland.
