A walkable neighborhood with lots to explore
Carmen Gray, a Realtor of over eight years, says that Midtown is one of her favorite places in Sacramento to talk about, and it's not hard to see why. Midtown is located only a mile away from California's State Capitol building and serves as the city's central cultural hub. "It just has so much going for it. You're in the city, and there are awesome Happy Hours, parks, museums and galleries," says Gray. "It's a truly walkable neighborhood — people here are always biking or walking around." Diversity is found in every aspect of the community — from its art and restaurants to residents. Gray says, "The energy the city has is so lively! You've got families from all walks of life, and people are happy and excited to be here. They will say hi to you on a walk."
From condos to Craftsman-style homes
The vast majority of residents here rent, coming in at about 90%. The remaining 10 percent own proprieties such as condos, brownstones, lofts and Victorian or Craftsman-style homes. According to Gray, Midtown's range in architectural styles is part of what makes the neighborhood so charming: "When you're here, you're going to see a stunning Queen Anne, and then all of a sudden down the street is a modern style condo. The eclectic nature of the city is present in the housing." Prices for purchasing a property range from $800,000 to $3 million. The average rent is about $1700 a month.
Shopping & dining in Midtown
Gray describes the Midtown dining scene as "foodie heaven," and the neighborhood has the accolades to back up this claim. In 2023, WalletHub ranked Sacramento's food scene as the best in the state and third in the county. Gray says: "As a fellow foodie myself, I have to say the food here is amazing — there's so many local businesses to try out and support. Even the happy hours are great." She personally recommends 58 Degrees & Holding Co., a restaurant serving New American cuisine. Laura Craft Brewery and Cornerstone Cafe and Bar are Gray's go-to for drinks. Residents can shop for groceries at places like Safeway or smaller convenience stores scattered throughout the area, such as Peace and Pacific Market.
Grabbing produce at the Midtown Farmers Market
The Midtown Association organizes the Midtown Farmer's Market, which is held every Saturday year-round from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The market spans five blocks and has over 200 local vendors selling fresh produce, food, drinks and flowers. Other activities in the area include visiting the California State Railroad Museum and Crocker Art Museum. The neighborhood association also partners with artists yearly to showcase their work around the area, one example being the 2019 Trash Can Wrap Artist Team. Gray says events are plentiful and always happening: "I love all activities at Midtown. There will always be something to do, and there's something for everyone to enjoy."
Extra credit at C.K. McClatchy High
Children can begin their studies at David Lubin Elementary School, which is rated B-plus by Niche. They can then continue at California Middle School and C.K. McClatchy High School, which earn B and B-plus overall ratings, respectively. C.K. McClatchy High offers the ASSETs program to its students, providing extra enrichment outside of the classroom. These courses can be taken for credit. Some lessons include Jazz Band, Theater Production, Life Guarding and ESL Academic Success.
Strolling around California State Capitol Park
Despite being the heart of the city, Midtown has no shortage of green spaces to visit. One option is Albert Winn Park, located on 28th Street. Residents often come to lounge in the grass during sunny days or take their children to the playground. Every Wednesday from 3-7 p.m., vendors set up shop, selling goodies such as clothes, tote bags, art, drinks, food and more. Heading east will lead to California State Capitol Park, a manicured green space with monuments, memorials, gardens, and paths for walking.
Traveling via Interstate 5
Public transportation options, such as the light rail and bus stops, are available to get around the city. To leave Midtown, residents can take Interstate 5 and Highway 50. Interstate 5 leads to the Sacramento International Airport, about a 12-mile drive away.
