Living simply in Saint Louis Park

In the summer, kids cool off in Oak Hill Park’s splash pad; in the winter, the same spot dons Christmas lights for the neighborhood to enjoy. This transformation reflects the Oak Hill lifestyle, which is not one of excess, but of practicality. Here, well-maintained 1950s cottages sit a short walk away from neighborhood parks. Just beyond the neighborhood’s bounds, local bars, restaurants and bakeries offer spots for residents to gather and hang out, and a collection of retail chains makes running errands a breeze. Children attend well-rated public schools, and parents often work at the nearby Methodist Hospital or 15 minutes away in downtown Minneapolis. Living in Oak Hill is all about simplicity, ease and efficiency.

Well-maintained 1950s cottages

Oak Hill has “a lot of older properties, dating back to the early 1900s,” according to Realtor Michael Kootsikas, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 10 years. Oak Hill’s residential streets are dotted with cozy bungalows and lined with sidewalks shaded by tall, colorful trees. Most homes were built with brick or vinyl siding, each painted with different colors and having its own unique architectural charm. Most were built in the 1950s, though some date back to the 1920s. Here, buyers can generally find a three- to four-bedroom home for $350,000 to $450,000. Though new construction is limited, “They’re taking the older stock homes and remodeling them,” says Joel Friday, a Twin Cities Realtor with nearly 20 years of experience. Oak Hill has one condo complex, Thirty Three Hundred on the Park, where prices range from $200,000 for a one-bedroom unit to $250,000 for a two-bedroom unit.

Parks are a short stroll away

Parkland takes up most of Oak Hill, meaning most residents are just a short stroll away from a public green space. Louisiana Oaks Park is the neighborhood’s largest, complete with athletic facilities like baseball, softball and soccer fields, as well as recreational amenities like a playground and picnic tables. In the winter, residents come from across Saint Louis Park to check out the park’s holiday lights display. Oak Hill Park is perhaps the neighborhood’s cornerstone, attracting residents in the summers with its splash pad and in the winters with its ice rink. Oak Hill Park’s holiday light display includes a donning of its splash pad, finding a year-round function for an otherwise seasonal space. Other neighborhood parks include Walker Park and Oregon Park, the former having a soccer field and the latter offering a playground.

Casual lunches and dinners are enjoyed at Wok in the Park, which serves Asian fusion cuisine.
