Shearer Hills
Shopping and dining with the world’s largest cowboy boots
Close to grocery stores like Whole Foods Market and H-E-B, Shearer Hills is a haven for shopping and dining options. Park North Shopping Center contains large retailers like Target and World Market, while North Star Mall houses over 200 specialty stores, restaurants and the world’s biggest pair of cowboy boots. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Park North location features eight auditoriums playing everything from Hollywood blockbusters to obscure foreign films, with over 30 beers on tap. The area also has a mix of fast-casual, quick-service and locally owned eateries, including Sawasdee Thai Cuisine and The Dogfather. The hotdog-focused cafe features rotating weekly hamburger specials and vegan options, while Sawasdee has been serving Thai cuisine from family recipes for nearly two decades.Short commutes on a variety of roadways
“This is a very established neighborhood. It’s near everything, but at the same time, it’s very quiet. Major employment centers are also just minutes away,” says Bakke. There’s also plenty of commuting within the neighborhood, thanks to the numerous shopping centers and eateries, and getting to them can take many forms. The VIA Metropolitan Transit system operates bus routes 4 and 5 in Shearer Hills, and the North Star Transit Center bus station is just outside the North Star Mall. Major roadways like Interstate 410 and Highway 281 combine with local streets like Basse Road, Oblate Drive and San Pedro Avenue to take locals throughout the city and to the neighborhood-adjacent San Antonio International Airport or CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital-Alamo Heights. Sidewalks run throughout the area, although not all of them connect. Cyclists should be aware there are no north-to-south bike lanes in the neighborhood, which is an issue for those biking along busy major roads.Golf courses, farmer’s markets and trail systems in Alamo City
There are plenty of ways to play in Shearer Hills. The San Pedro Driving Range has state-of-the-art lighting for nighttime play and is part of a system of seven courses spread throughout San Antonio. One of the other stops on the Alamo City Golf Trail is Olmos Basin Golf Course. It was renovated in 2021 to bring it up to date with new infrastructure and greens. The course is located in neighborhood-adjacent Olmos Basin Park, home to the San Antonio Farmer’s Market Association. It’s been operating in the area for 20 years and offers locally grown produce. Also in Olmos Basin Park, the Shearer Hills Walking Trail is a paved multi-use pathway that’s part of nearly seven miles of trails throughout the green space.A slice of midcentury nostalgia
Moving through the serpentine neighborhood streets of Shearer Hills can feel like stepping back in time or onto a movie set. The housing development was primarily built in the 1950s as soldiers returned from World War II. It’s filled with midcentury modern and ranch-style homes surrounded by spacious lawns and scattered oak trees. Oversized picture windows and large backyards are common, and the Shearer Hills/Ridgeview Neighborhood Association works to sustain the community’s quality of life through clean-ups, regular meetings and monthly socials. Prices range from $110,000 for a one-bedroom condo to $465,000 for a newly remodeled four-bedroom ranch-style house. Shearer Hills homes have an average price of $290,000 and sell after 67 days on the market, longer than the national average of 42 days.Bilingual classes, STEM programs and an international school
Students in Shearer Hills might attend Ridgeview Elementary, Nimitz Middle or Legacy of Educational Excellence High. Niche awarded Ridgeview a B-plus, Nimitz a B-minus and LEE High a B. Ridgeview Elementary features a dual language program and an after-school club called the Kids’ Involvement Network for enrichment activities and tutoring. Nimitz Middle is home to the STEM Academy Middle School magnet program. It’s dedicated to fostering careers in biomedical sciences, engineering and technology. LEE High is one of Texas’ best art high schools. It houses the STEM Academy High School program and is an International School of the Americas.Old world labyrinths in century-old schools
The neighborhood has nearly a dozen Protestant and Catholic places of worship, including the Labyrinth of the Little Flower. This open-air interactive pathway is part of the Immaculate Conception Chapel of the Oblate School of Theology and was modeled after a similar medieval labyrinth at the Cathedral of Chartres in France. The walkway is designed for meditation or prayer and is open to the public, no matter their religious background.Environmental factors and crime
Shearer Hills has a CAP Index score of five, meaning it has a higher amount of crime than most of the country’s neighborhoods. Residents here have a greater chance of being victims of property crimes than violence. There’s also the chance of extreme weather and flooding, as evidenced by the 2013 flooding of San Antonio after 10 inches of rain fell in a matter of hours. To combat this, the neighborhood is scheduled to begin a drainage improvement project in 2025, with sidewalk and curb improvements set to begin in 2027.
