Midcentury neighborhood with modern amenities
Between the city and the country, Shearer Hills combines the best of rural and urban living. Found in the hills overlooking San Antonio, the area offers incredible skyline views of downtown, which lies just eight miles away. Once farmland before San Antonio’s housing boom in the 1950s, Shearer Hills/Ridgeview, as the neighborhood is sometimes called, was one of the city’s first residential developments. “Shearer Hills attracts people looking for a classic Americana lifestyle. There are tree-lined streets, 1950s-style homes, and people walking their dogs. There’s a sense of community here because everyone knows each other. Families raise their children here and stay,” says Cory Bakke, a Realtor with the Phyliss Browning Company and member of the San Antonio Board of Realtors since 2010. That spirit of community extends to the neighborhood hosting the San Antonio Migrant Resource Center, where asylum seekers temporarily live as they transition into their new lives.

Shopping and dining with the world’s largest cowboy boots
Close to grocery stores like Whole Foods Market and H-E-B, Shearer Hills is a haven for shopping and dining options. Park North Shopping Center contains large retailers like Target and World Market, while North Star Mall houses over 200 specialty stores, restaurants and the world’s biggest pair of cowboy boots. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Park North location features eight auditoriums playing everything from Hollywood blockbusters to obscure foreign films, with over 30 beers on tap. The area also has a mix of fast-casual, quick-service and locally owned eateries, including Sawasdee Thai Cuisine and The Dogfather. The hotdog-focused cafe features rotating weekly hamburger specials and vegan options, while Sawasdee has been serving Thai cuisine from family recipes for nearly two decades.

Short commutes on a variety of roadways
“This is a very established neighborhood. It’s near everything, but at the same time, it’s very quiet. Major employment centers are also just minutes away,” says Bakke. There’s also plenty of commuting within the neighborhood, thanks to the numerous shopping centers and eateries, and getting to them can take many forms. The VIA Metropolitan Transit system operates bus routes 4 and 5 in Shearer Hills, and the North Star Transit Center bus station is just outside the North Star Mall. Major roadways like Interstate 410 and Highway 281 combine with local streets like Basse Road, Oblate Drive and San Pedro Avenue to take locals throughout the city and to the neighborhood-adjacent San Antonio International Airport or CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital-Alamo Heights. Sidewalks run throughout the area, although not all of them connect. Cyclists should be aware there are no north-to-south bike lanes in the neighborhood, which is an issue for those biking along busy major roads.

Environmental factors and crime
Shearer Hills has a CAP Index score of five, meaning it has a higher amount of crime than most of the country’s neighborhoods. Residents here have a greater chance of being victims of property crimes than violence. There’s also the chance of extreme weather and flooding, as evidenced by the 2013 flooding of San Antonio after 10 inches of rain fell in a matter of hours. To combat this, the neighborhood is scheduled to begin a drainage improvement project in 2025, with sidewalk and curb improvements set to begin in 2027.
