Speicher Memorial Park is 2.5 miles south of the neighborhood and includes several baseball and softball fields, a walking trail and a skate park. Just north of the park is the San Bernardino Soccer Complex, a 47-acre facility with 17 top-quality fields, including four lit for play after dark. Aside from city parks, residents have access to plenty of other recreation and entertainment options. "There's a casino that was just remodeled, and it's bringing in many well-known artists. Plus, you're only about 45 minutes to an hour away from Big Bear," Padilla says. The Yaamava' Resort & Casino is just west of the neighborhood and was recently named the best casino outside Las Vegas by USA Today. The resort has booked singers and entertainers like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ludacris and Ringo Starr. The famous Big Bear Lake is about 33 miles northeast along City Creek Road. This resort town is active year-round, offering exciting ski slopes at Big Bear Mountain and plenty of hiking and biking trails. Living in Amber Hills gives residents convenient access to groceries, with a Stater Bros. Market at the corner of Highland Avenue and Palm Avenue. There is also a Food4Less on the corner of Highland Avenue and Victoria Avenue. Locals can also head to the Walmart on Highland Avenue for other household needs. Several fast-food restaurants are nearby, including Jack in the Box, Del Taco and Starbucks. Taco Joe's Mexican Restaurant is a popular sit-down option for classic Mexican dishes. Amber Hills is just north of Foothills Freeway, which gives residents a 7-mile drive south to Interstate 10 or can take them west to Interstate 215. The freeway is also how residents will make the 65-mile drive west to Los Angeles. Downtown San Bernardino is about 7 miles west of the neighborhood. Much of the neighborhood's southern end is home to Patton State Hospital, a forensic psychiatric hospital that was opened in 1893. The hospital currently has approximately 1,500 beds and provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients.
