A quaint community at the base of the mountains

Nestled into the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, the aptly named Amber Hills neighborhood surrounds residents with mountain vistas in a small residential community. "It's upcoming and quiet. It's a really quaint neighborhood," says Pedro Padilla, a Realtor with Realty Masters & Associates who works in the area. "The neighborhood has a nice mix of traditional and adobe-style houses." Residents can find typical Southwest houses in this area, which is bound by the mountains on the north and San Bernardino to the south. The large city provides residents with access to grocery stores, popular restaurants and nearby attractions that add excitement to the lives of Amber Hills residents.

Houses in Amber Hills are mostly Spanish-style homes with white stucco siding and red tile roofs, but with some modern features such as built-in garages. Many homes incorporate brick and stone elements into the exteriors, and some feature triangular front-gabled roofs, adding a contemporary flair to the home. There are some adobe-style homes with stucco exteriors and flat roofs. Most homes are built close together, giving the area a neighborly feel and making it easy for residents to get to know each other. Sidewalks line the streets, which are shaded by a mix of short, leafy trees and towering palms. The winding, hilly roads in the neighborhood give some residents pristine views of San Bernardino below. Most homes in Amber Hills have three or four bedrooms and cost between $450,000 and $650,000.

A short commute to San Bernardino schools

Students in Amber Hills will likely attend Belvedere Elementary School, Serrano Middle School and San Gorgonio High School. The middle school receives a B-minus from Niche, while the elementary and high schools are each rated a B. Serrano Middle is conveniently located in the center of the neighborhood, giving parents and students a quick commute in the morning. San Gorgonio High is just 2.5 miles southwest of the community. The school serves approximately 1,600 students with a student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. Students can study career pathways in automotive technology, business and computer technology, construction and hospitality.

Entertainment and recreation abounds in the San Bernardino Mountains

Residents have plenty of options for recreation nearby. Speicher Memorial Park is 2.5 miles south of the neighborhood and includes several baseball and softball fields, a walking trail and a skate park. Just north of the park is the San Bernardino Soccer Complex, a 47-acre facility with 17 top-quality fields, including four lit for play after dark. Aside from city parks, residents have access to plenty of other recreation and entertainment options. "There's a casino that was just remodeled, and it's bringing in many well-known artists. Plus, you're only about 45 minutes to an hour away from Big Bear," Padilla says. The Yaamava' Resort & Casino is just west of the neighborhood and was recently named the best casino outside Las Vegas by USA Today. The resort has booked singers and entertainers like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ludacris and Ringo Starr. The famous Big Bear Lake is about 33 miles northeast along City Creek Road. This resort town is active year-round, offering exciting ski slopes at Big Bear Mountain and plenty of hiking and biking trails. Visitors can hit the lake in the warmer months for fishing, jet skiing and kayaking.

San Bernardino staples just down the street

Living in Amber Hills gives residents convenient access to groceries, with a Stater Bros. Market at the corner of Highland Avenue and Palm Avenue. There is also a Food4Less on the corner of Highland Avenue and Victoria Avenue. Locals can also head to the Walmart on Highland Avenue for other household needs. Several fast-food restaurants are nearby, including Jack in the Box, Del Taco and Starbucks. Taco Joe's Mexican Restaurant is a popular sit-down option for classic Mexican dishes. Locals enjoy the street-style tacos, burritos and chile rellenos in this casual restaurant with exposed brick and colorful décor in the dining room.

Traverse the Inland Empire on Foothills Freeway

Amber Hills is just north of Foothills Freeway, which gives residents a 7-mile drive south to Interstate 10 or can take them west to Interstate 215. The freeway is also how residents will make the 65-mile drive west to Los Angeles. Downtown San Bernardino is about 7 miles west of the neighborhood. There are several bus stops along Highland Road on the neighborhood's southern end for those who prefer public transit.

Learn the history of California's state hospitals

Much of the neighborhood's southern end is home to Patton State Hospital, a forensic psychiatric hospital that was opened in 1893. The hospital currently has approximately 1,500 beds and provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients. The hospital includes a museum detailing the history of psychiatry and the treatment of mental illnesses in California.
