A trendy San Francisco hub with hippie movement roots
Hayes Valley is considered one of the most on-trend neighborhoods in San Francisco. People flock here for its mecca of popular boutiques, restaurants and entertainment offerings. “You are considered very hip if you live in Hayes Valley,” says Eddie O’Sullivan, a longtime San Francisco resident and local realtor. “You have everything outside of your doorstep. The trendiest stores and cafes, the coolest restaurants and the opera – it's all here.” Part of Hayes Valley’s aesthetic can be tied to its history, as the community also contains the Haight Filmore section of the city, which was where the San Francisco bohemian hippie movement was made famous in the 1960s. Now, the area attracts a wide range of residents from all walks of life who share the same appreciation for the neighborhood’s unique aesthetic. “What’s cool about Hayes Valley is the diversity. You’ll see a younger hip crowd; then you’ll have someone like my client, a winemaker from Sonoma who needs a place to stay on the weekends, or some empty nesters who sold their homes in the suburbs and are ready to come back and live in the city,” O’Sullivan says. “There’s also a bunch of baby boomers mixed in with hipsters who live here, so I guess you could call it a hub for the ‘boomsters.’ With art-centric urban parks, vintage Edwardian condos and vibrant lifestyle offerings all within walking distance, the neighborhood keeps its unique, counterculture roots alive and well.

Some condos are placed along busy streets with wide sidewalks, while others, along with most of the neighborhood’s single-family homes, are situated on quieter side streets with small sidewalks. Single-family homes range from $1.5 million to $3.6 million, while condos can go as low as $450,000 for a very small 1-bedroom condo and up to $2.7 million for a luxury-style condo with four bedrooms and amenities such as a pool and a workout center.
