Quiet, convenient and comfortable
Willow Glen can feel like a suburb that was misplaced in central San Jose. Located just a few blocks south of Downtown, the neighborhood’s wide, shady streets stand in stark contrast to the bustling cityscape less than a mile away. In some ways this makes sense, as the neighborhood began life in the mid-19th century as a rural suburb of what was then a much smaller San Jose. Residential development in the area didn’t begin in earnest until the 1920s and 1930s when many of the neighborhood’s more historic homes were built.
Today, Willow Glen’s formerly agrarian population has been replaced by white-collar workers who prize the neighborhood for its stylish homes, tree-lined streets and, above all, its supremely convenient location. Downtown is just a few blocks away, Interstate 280 offers easy access to Santa Clara, Palo Alto and the rest of the Bay Area, and the neighborhood train station connects to both local light rail and regional transit networks. And while most of the neighborhood is composed of quiet, residential blocks, there are a slew of popular local restaurants and shops along centrally located Lincoln Avenue, along with a number of major shopping centers found at the edges of the neighborhood.

Unique housing options
Willow Glen is also known for the impressive variety of its residential architecture. House hunters can find everything from Tudors and Victorians to Mission-style homes. The Fairhaven area has an impressive collection of midcentury Eichler tract homes. Developer Joseph Eichler was known for bringing the inspiration of Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra to midcentury suburban homeowners. Smaller properties in the neighborhood sell for $1.5 to 2.5 million dollars, while homes offering upwards of 2,000 square feet typically have price tags in the $2.5 to $4 million dollar price range.

Willow Street Frank Bramhall Park is the largest of these, featuring baseball and soccer fields as well as basketball and tennis courts. Scenic routes like the Los Gatos Creek Trail and Three Creeks connect Willow Glen with Downtown San Jose and other nearby neighborhoods.
When Willow Glen residents want to visit some real wilderness, they don’t have to travel far. The Santa Cruz Mountain Range is just ten miles south of the neighborhood, and home to dozens of preserves, recreation areas and county and state parks, many of them connected by an extensive network of short and long-distance trails. A number of highly-regarded wineries can be found hidden away among the mountains as well.
