Baywood-Aragon
Early 20th-century housing along tree-lined streets
Baywood-Aragon's winding streetscapes are lined with grand architecture, often well-shaded by mature oak and bay trees. With preserved homes primarily built in the early to mid-20th century, common housing styles include Colonial Revivals, Tudor Revivals and Spanish Missions. "Almost 80% of homes maintain historic integrity," says Laurie Hietter, the president of San Mateo Heritage Alliance. As the Baywood portion of the neighborhood has the bulk of historic housing, the Aragon sector has "a little more typical California ranch-style homes" mixed in, Cobb says. Houses have between three to five bedrooms, with some residing on lots just large enough for small front garden beds, while other grander estates feature extended lots and backyards suitable for pools. Home prices range from $2.2 million to $8 million, depending on size, lots and renovations. Condos are also popular in Baywood-Aragon, with small one-bedroom units starting at $500,000 and luxury two- to three-bedroom condos selling for more than $2.5 million.Public schools with biotechnology pathway programs
Students may attend Baywood Elementary School, which gets an A rating from Niche, followed by the A-minus-rated Borel Middle School. The A-plus-rated Aragon High School offers a special Biotechnology Career Pathway program, which allows students interested in biotechnics to work with local companies and medical and academic institutions.Creekside recreation and a park with a 300-year-old bay tree
The neighborhood’s DeAnza Historical Park is an open green space along the San Mateo Creek, while Bay Tree Park features a shaded resting area under a sprawling, notorious 300-year-old bay tree. The nearby 16-acre San Mateo Central Park has winding walking trails, tennis courts, a baseball diamond and designated picnic areas. It also features a popular Japanese and rose garden space, along with a wooden playground and ice-skating rink. Plus, the neighborhood is about 2 miles from the coast of the San Francisco Bay, where windsurfing, kayaking, boating and more walking trails can be found.Walkable to a wide variety of downtown restaurants
Top downtown restaurants are within walking distance of Baywood-Aragon. HiroNori Craft Ramen is known for its authentic ramen noodle dishes and is next to Pacific Catch, a hip, modern seafood restaurant that serves Pan-Pacific dishes from Hawaiian poke to tacos. The family-owned Dean's Produce is one of the go-to grocery spots around the neighborhood, while the Hillsdale Shopping Center is a few miles away along Route 82. This center is home to numerous well-known retailers like Banana Republic and Williams Sonoma.Next to multiple thoroughfares and the San Mateo BART station
Along with Route 82, California State Route 92, U.S. Highway 101 and Interstate 280 surround the neighborhood, making Baywood-Aragon an accessible option for commuting to San Francisco or Silicon Valley. The neighborhood has a few public bus stops, and the San Mateo Caltrain Station is just over a mile away for another public transportation option. The San Francisco International Airport is 10 miles north for domestic and international flights.Community events in downtown San Mateo
Central Park, located in downtown San Mateo, hosts popular community events throughout the year, including a summer concert series with performances by local musicians. SummerFest is another major event that takes over seven blocks of downtown. It features arts and crafts activities, food and drink vendors, plus live entertainment. In September, the San Mateo Fall Fest brings in over 5,000 patrons for an outdoor block party with local music, family-friendly activities, food and fall-inspired craft beer and cider.
