San Diego suburbs with walkable schools and recreation
East Elliott is in the northwest corner of Santee, a suburban city 17 miles from downtown San Diego. Above all things, the neighborhood is popular for its broad convenience. Residents enjoy planned suburban amenities like walkable schools, a country club and recreation areas within their community. Outside the residential streets, these communities are between miles of grassy foothills to the northwest and large shopping centers to the southeast. “Not many areas of San Diego County have this super convenient town center. They have to drive every which way, while we go to one place for everything,” says Jenniffer Taylor, Realtor with Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty and resident of Santee. Santee’s town center is 2 miles from most homes in East Elliott and has almost everything residents could need, from multiple retail plazas to a train station for commuters. With almost everything they need within a short radius, people here don't have much reason to go far, but they can hop on multiple nearby freeways if they do.

Planned suburban living
East Elliott consists of two suburban communities: Carlton Oaks to the south of Mast Boulevard and Weston to the north. Carlton Oaks is the more established of the two, mainly developed in the 1960s. Residents enjoy walkability to community parks and Carlton Oaks Country Club on the community’s south end. The neighborhood’s schools are also nestled within Carlton Oaks’ residential streets. Its drives and cul-de-sacs are lined with 1960s ranch-style and 1980s Mediterranean-influenced homes on midsize grassy lawns. Many have been remodeled with modern interiors and pool patios, and outfitted with energy-efficient solar panels. These range from $700,000 to over $1 million. Weston has a narrow layout of a few main drives extending north from Mast Boulevard. It has a community park and pool, as well as direct access to Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve. Most of its ranch-style and Mediterranean-influenced homes were built in the 1970s and can cost $800,000 to $1 million. Weston has seen quite a bit of recent development since 2019, with larger contemporary homes sporting Mediterranean-style stucco exteriors ranging from $1 million to $1.5 million.

Santee Lakes Preserve and hiking in the foothills
The suburbs are sandwiched by outdoor activity, with Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve on the east and miles of open space to the west. Santee Lakes consists of a string of small lakes that were developed into a recreation area alongside the development of Santee’s suburbs in the 1960s. The lakes are lined with paved walking paths, and the grassy land bridges in between are home to gazebos, playgrounds and fishing piers. Walking paths even extend to small islands on the lakes with playgrounds and picnic areas. Hikers can explore miles of foothills and wildflower meadows north and west of the suburbs. The Mission Gorge Trail is the nearest trailhead for hiking through Mission Trails Regional Park on the neighborhood’s west side. The hills to the north of Mast Boulevard have trails that are walkable from many homes. Santee Boulders is a popular nearby stop on these trails. It’s a collection of giant natural boulder formations that offer a challenge for rock climbers or a photo op for casual hikers. Residents also enjoy community parks and pools within the suburbs. Many belong to Carlton Oaks Country Club, which is part of the Carlton Oaks community. It has an 18-hole golf course, a clubhouse and a pool. But the club is a draw for everyone, not just athletes. “We go to the country club for events and live music all the time; it’s not all about the golf,” adds Taylor.

Risk of wildfires
The grassy area west of the neighborhood suburbs is labeled as a very high fire hazard zone. This already high risk, combined with the increasing presence of wildfires in Southern California, means that residents should take measures to prevent and prepare for fires. Homeowners in these high-risk areas are required to remove and mitigate the growth of dry, flammable brush around their property to prevent fires from spreading into residential areas. It’s most important to have an established evacuation plan in preparation for a fire.
Crime
Part of East Elliott’s suburban appeal is its relatively low crime. The neighborhood has an overall CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, compared to the U.S. average of 4.
