Active community in the Sonoran Desert

Along the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, Ancala is an active, gated community in Scottsdale. Many residents here are members of the Ancala Country Club, which grants private access to an 18-hole golf course, fitness center, swimming pools and a year-round schedule of social events. “It’s the country club lifestyle. There are restaurants, a bar and a golf shop. It’s a pretty friendly community,” says Jim Steimer, a Realtor with Realty Executive Phoenix and over 30 years of experience. “The Ancala Country Club draws a lot of people in, but you don’t have to be a member to live here,” says Morgan Hodges, an associate broker at Realty One with more than 15 years of experience. Route 101 is found 7 miles west, and most area parks, schools and businesses are within 5 miles. “Grocery stores are less than a half mile away. You have all the amenities: restaurants, fast food, car washes, dry cleaners and all kinds of stuff,” Steimer says. The overall CAP Index Crime Score here is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Area houses of worship include the Islamic Center of North East Valley, Congregational Church of the Valley and St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church.

Member-only amenities and nearby trails and parks

Members can exercise at the community’s fitness center, where they may also meet with a personal trainer for weight loss or golf game support. There are also lighted tennis courts and community pools, where folks cool down on hot summer days when temperatures here regularly top 100 degrees. The private 18-hole golf course is the club’s centerpiece, offering manicured greens with sweeping Sonoran Desert views set by distant mountain ranges. Steimer recommends the public trails in the area, like the 4-mile Lost Dog Wash Trail, which is popular for horseback riding, biking and hiking along its dirt-packed route through the McDowell Mountains. Less than a mile west, the 13-acre Cholla Park is the neighborhood go-to for sports like pickleball and sand volleyball or a family picnic on the grassy field by the playground and park ramadas.

Year-round community events for country club members

Community events for members are held throughout the year, including trivia nights, live music and dance classes; seasonal traditions include Valentine’s Day card-making in February and photo-ops with Santa in December. There are also wellness seminars and group fitness classes, like yoga at sunset. In June, kids can attend Camp Ancala—a summer camp with lots of fun activities like laser tag, golf lessons and visits with animals from the Phoenix Zoo. Many of Ancala’s most popular events are on the golf course, like men’s and ladies’ days, putting competitions and themed course tournaments. Members may also apply to host private events here, like weddings or award banquets.

Nearby groceries, restaurants and businesses

Members can dine at Overlook, an elegant, modern restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner with comfort food favorites like eggs benedict, fish tacos and braised short ribs. The club also offers Underpass, a cafe at the golf course’s turn with snacks and happy hour specials. Less than a mile west, Ancala Village Shopping Center includes an Albertson’s for groceries, fast-food chains and small businesses like hair and nail salons. Local eateries here include Pars, which serves authentic Persian fare like grilled kebabs, and George & Son’s Asian Cuisine, which is popular for its diverse menu with authentic dishes from Thai, Burmese, and Vietnamese cultures. For a cup of coffee, Black Rock is less than a mile southeast, next to Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers, a popular Arizona-based sports bar chain. “There’s a bunch of restaurants—everything you can think of. It just depends on what your appetite is,” Steimer says.

Spanish-style mansions near a country club

Set along wide, quiet streets lined with sidewalks and xeriscaped yards dotted by low-water plantings like native saguaro cacti and rosewood, Ancala’s homes are mostly three- to five-bedroom new traditional or Spanish-style mansions built in the early 2000s. Homes here are typically a part of the local homeowners association, where monthly dues range from $100 to $200 and go toward community maintenance. Lot sizes typically range from a quarter-acre to an acre with 5,000 to 11,000 square feet of living space. Typical features include attached multi-car garages and covered patios, while some homes have private tennis courts, guest houses or swimming pools. “Not every house is going to have a private pool. You’ll see some pools that are ordinary and some that have swim-up bars with rock waterfalls. It runs the gamut based on the house and the size of the lot,” Steimer says. Prices here typically range from $900,000 to $4 million, depending on a home’s size and features. “The rule of thumb is the higher you go on the mountain, the more expensive it gets,” Steimer says. In the neighborhood's southeast, there are also a handful of two- to three-bedroom townhomes from the late 20th century with tan stucco exteriors and attached garages. Prices for these homes typically range from $650,000 to $850,000, depending on size.

Scottsdale Unified District schools receive high marks from Niche

Ancala is part of the Scottsdale Unified School District, rated the second-best district in Arizona and A overall by Niche. Local kids may start at Anasazi Elementary before moving on to Desert Canyon Middle—both rated A. At the latter, students can explore their interests in extracurricular clubs like crochet, robotics and Loki’s Logicians, where kids discuss logic- and math-based questions. Teens can attend the A-minus-rated Desert Mountain High, which offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) program for students interested in developing their cultural awareness and critical thinking through IB-specific classes. “Scottsdale Unified School District is a pretty good school district, but you have a lot of alternatives,” Steimer says. The A-plus-rated BASIS Scottsdale is rated the best high school for STEM in Arizona, while the A-rated Notre Dame Prep is a private Catholic school known for its faith-based teachings that emphasize community service as a part of students’ curricula.
