Westborough
A midcentury suburb full of pastel condos and split-levels
Westborough was developed in the 1960s as South San Francisco transformed from the industrial “Smokestack Capital of the Peninsula” into the suburb it is now. Most homes date to the 1960s-1980s, although some condominiums along the neighborhood’s periphery were built as recently as the 2000s. "Another draw is that the homes tend to be larger in Westborough than many of the surrounding neighborhoods, where most homes are two bedrooms and one bath,” Lee says. “In Westborough, you can find homes with four bedrooms and three bathrooms." Westborough Boulevard splits the neighborhood between northern and southern sections; condos predominate north of the boulevard, while split-level, single-family residences line the streets to its south. Condos range in price from $700,000 to $900,000, while single-family residences can fetch between $1 million and $1.3 million. Many homes sit at a slight incline due to the elevated terrain of the San Francisco Peninsula, and front-yard shrubbery offers privacy within this densely populated community.Avid learners attend South City High
Monte Verde Elementary School, Westborough Middle School and South San Francisco High School each receive B-plus ratings from Niche. South San Francisco High, commonly called "South City High," develops students’ critical thinking and note-taking skills through its Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. Plus, this school’s FutureLab STEM program offers biotech students the opportunity to tutor elementary schoolers.Outdoor adventures around every corner
Located along Westborough Boulevard, Westborough Park serves as the green heart of the surrounding neighborhood. A playground, a baseball field, pickleball courts and two grills make it a popular destination for both playing and picnicking. Sellick Park offers similar opportunities south of the boulevard. Westborough is also home to Callan Park, where tree-shaded trails connect to a network of backyard pathways. Whether it’s on a rainy day or for a friendly gathering, the Classic Bowling Center offers an indoor alternative to Westborough’s other sports venues. The storied California Golf Club of San Francisco, known locally as Cal Club, is just on the other side of Interstate 280 and is for members only.Diverse shopping and dining options in Westborough
Westborough is home to the Westborough Center, a retail hub with diverse shopping and dining options. The strip mall includes a Safeway, as well as the Pacific Supermarket, which features imported Asian groceries including Indonesian cassava chips and Japanese ramen. The Pho Saigon restaurant serves up a variety of Vietnamese dishes, especially pho. Tokyo Sushi & Bar offers bento boxes in addition to its namesake seafood specialty. The Shops at Tanforan is a 3-mile drive around the corner from the Westborough Center and serves as one of the region’s largest indoor shopping venues. Brand-name retailers like JCPenney, Target and Petco fill Tanforan’s halls. However, this shopping center is projected to be redeveloped into a mixed-use development at an undetermined time in the near future. All roads lead to San Francisco
Westborough sits between Interstate 280 and Skyline Boulevard, each of them providing expedient access to San Francisco 14 miles to the north. This neighborhood is also a short bus ride away from the South San Francisco BART station, which offers a 22-minute commute into the city by rail. San Francisco International Airport is a 5-mile drive around the corner, as are the coastal viewpoints of Mori Point and Mussel Rock Park.
