Margo means “pearl,” fitting for an area whose crowning jewel is a body of water. Driving through the rural community, you can tell how much everyone treasures Lake Anna, a multitude of marinas and restaurants named after the lake. “Many people move here because of the proximity to Lake Anna,” says Anne Corbin with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc., resident and Realtor with nine years of experience.
East of the lake in Spotsylvania County, Margo features large lots of land for single-family homes, giving it a peaceful pastoral feel. Having over an acre of land is easy to come by no matter what your budget is. “There’s a range of housing, some that are inexpensive and some in the millions. It’s a very eclectic area price-wise. You can definitely find what you’re looking for,” Corbin says. Further from the lake but with plentiful yardage, buy ranch-style houses for around $358,200 or Cape Cods for about $281,500. Closer to the water and secluded by woodlands, you can find more ranch-style homes for around $333,800. For those seeking a lakeside retreat in the woods, a new construction house with its own private dock and views overlooking the water can go for $1.7 million.
Students in Margo go to the Spotsylvania County Public School District, which earns a B grade according to Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. Schools include Livingston Elementary School, Post Oak Middle School and Spotsylvania High School. On Niche, all three schools earn B-minus grades. The district has been designated one of the Best Communities for Music Education by The NAMM Foundation for high-quality musical fine arts.
Margo has abundant outdoor recreation, especially at Lake Anna State Park. “Living by the lake means you can certainly boat and relax on the beach,” Corbin says. The state park also has hiking trails, cabins to stay in and campgrounds. There's no end to the water activities from fishing to kayaking and canoeing. At Anna Point Marina, launch boats off wide ramps for jaunts on the water. For a park on dry land, head to Chewning Park for playgrounds, baseball fields and a picnic pavilion.
The area has local retail for basics like groceries and a few restaurants. The 208 Variety Store offers a deli and snacks to pick up as you get gas at the station. To stock up on the week’s food, head to Keystone Grocery. As for local restaurants, Lake Anna Hideaway offers seafood in a laidback but colorful interior with a large bar. Vito’s on Lake Anna has Italian fare in a dimly lit dining room or a large patio ideal for date night.
As for local events, the town of Mineral, a stone’s throw away across the lake, hosts many community get-togethers. At the Fall Festival, bring costumed children to trick-or-treat at the booths, where you can buy arts and crafts or snacks. The area also has a weekly farmers market during summer and autumn months where you can find locally grown produce, meats and home products.
About 74 miles from Washington, D.C., Margo residents can travel to the nation’s capital via Interstate 95 North. For weekend trips in the nation’s capital, visit the Tidal Basin, monuments and Smithsonian museums. In Margo, enjoy a rural community centered around Lake Anna and the state park for an outdoorsy lifestyle.
