A small, patriotic community on Staten Island
Travis-Chelsea, simply called Travis by locals, is an old-school neighborhood on Staten Island’s marshy West Shore. Three of its borders are natural areas: the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge to the east, Freshkills Park to the south and the Meredith Woods and Arthur Kill strait to the west. Bloomfield and Bulls Head neighborhoods sit just north. Travis embodies the quintessential American tale: named in honor of a 17th-century colonel, its rural farmland made way for industrialization, only to heed the effects of urbanization later on. The Americana quality throughout Travis is pervasive: American flags are a common sight, adorning single-family homes and wooden street lights, and the annual Fourth of July parade, the oldest consecutive affair in the country, draws a big crowd. The small stretch of Victoria Boulevard used for the parade has been formally named Independence Way. Oceanic Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1, one of the nation’s oldest volunteer fire departments and one of the last in the city, still serves the neighborhood. “People are very involved and it’s a tight-knit neighborhood, which you don’t see very often anymore,” says Kevin Bryant, Staten Island native and licensed real estate agent with Compass. “Travis is one of the last original Staten Island strongholds.”

Varied housing but limited availability
Travis’s long history is evident in its home stock, which consists of an eclectic mix of single-family homes and a small number of townhouses. The architectural makeup is vast, including split-level- and hi-ranches, colonial-style residences with vinyl siding, Craftsman cottages and mixed-material houses with stone and stucco facades. Despite the breadth of style, inventory is extremely limited in this neighborhood, where 78 percent of residents are homeowners. “There’s not much turnover here. Usually, when people move in, they are there forever,” Bryant says. Single-family homes start around $480,000 and climb to $1.1 million for spacious new constructions. The median price for a single-family home is just over $570,000, but small townhouses can sell for as low as $365,000.

The annual Independence Day celebration is a source of local pride
The Travis Fourth of July Parade has been a hallmark of the community since 1911. Every year, a fleet of decked-out floats, marching bands, police officers, military veterans, schools and community groups join the procession while thousands of patriots cheer from the side. The day before the parade, residents participate in the annual Fourth of July House Decorating Contest, decorating their homes in festive banners and colors.
Expansive green spaces border the neighborhood
Travis residents benefit from an abundance of nature. Freshkills Park, a former landfill until its 2001 closing, is currently being developed into an amenity-rich park, a sustainably-driven transformation that will debut in phases through 2036. The final park will scale 2,200 acres—triple the size of Central Park. As of October 2023, residents can enjoy Freshkills North Park, which includes cycling and walking paths and two birdwatching towers overlooking Main Creek, plus the athletic fields and playground at Schmul Park. For an even more immersive experience, locals head to the Meredith Woods nature preserve or the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge, which features open lawns, walking trails and The United for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, which cares for injured animals.

Service-oriented shops and established restaurants throughout
Most commerce is found in strip centers or single-family-homes-turned-businesses located along Victoria Boulevard, one of Staten Island’s main thoroughfares. Most shops cover basic needs, from auto-shops and pet groomers to doctors offices and gyms. The 13-acre Greenbelt Native Plant Center has been a staple in the community since 1911, while Beezy Beez is a small business selling honey-based products. A handful of eateries are located in Travis proper, including West Shore Inn Steakhouse, a surf-and-turf restaurant with warm, moody interiors, and Verde’s Pizza and Pasta House, a neighborhood favorite with a long menu. The West Shore Plaza has a Burlington Coat Factory and Dollar Tree, but there are plenty of big-box retailers and grocers located just east in the New Springville neighborhood.
