Close to the southern entrance of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Stow is 8 miles northeast of Akron and about 35 miles south of Cleveland. With about 34,000 residents, Stow is attractive to people who work in either city. “People like this area because the housing is good and affordable,” says Justin Berthiaume, a Realtor with Keller Williams Chervenic Realty. “You’re 10 minutes from pretty much anything you need.” For those who don’t work in Cleveland or Akron, the world headquarters of Joann Fabrics is close. “It’s located in nearby Hudson, but close enough that many people work there,” he adds. The Home Depot also has a distribution center in the northwest part of the city.

Neighborhood elementary schools in Stow
The Stow-Munroe Falls City School District has six elementary schools, an intermediate school that serves fifth and sixth graders, a middle school and a high school. Niche gives the district a B. “The school system is attractive for people moving to this area,” Berthiaume says. The elementary schools are in the neighborhood, and the middle and high schools are centrally located.” Stow-Munroe Falls High School gets a B grade and is known for its successful athletic programs. Holy Family is a private Catholic school serving first through eighth graders. Stow is 5 miles west of Kent State University, located in nearby Kent, with an enrollment of over 25,000.

Parks for humans and dogs in the Stow area
The Stow Parks and Recreation Department operates 11 parks within the city. Roses Run Country Club, one of several golf courses in the area, is open to the public near the Cuyahoga River on the south side of Stow. Silver Springs Park has a hiking trail and a lake. Bow Wow Beach is one of the most popular features, a dog park beach on Silver Springs Lake. “Before the dog park, people would swim and fish in the lake, but now it’s dogs only,” says Paul Simon, a broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Simon & Salhany Realty. Stow is also on the southern end of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a 32,000-acre behemoth stretching between Akron and Cleveland with many trails, some leading to waterfalls. Kayaking and canoeing trips down the Cuyahoga River south of Stow are available at Burning River Adventures. Stow is also in the southern part of the 34-mile Bike & Hike trail, which follows the course to two abandoned railroads.

Stow house prices below the national average
Stow's median single-family house price is $280,000, well below the $440,000 national average. Compared to nearby localities, the median cost is more expensive than Cuyahoga Falls, at $211,000 and Akron, at around $145,000. “Stow is a great community for a three-to-four-bedroom house priced between 250,000 and 400,000,” Berthiaume says. “Homes have character here, with not many new developments.” Condos are priced from $60,000 to $340,000. There are far fewer options for fans of townhouses. Those are priced between $100,000 and $300,000.

Stow shopping and dining options
Many of Stow's shopping and dining options are located on the main thoroughfares of Darrow and Kent Roads. Small shopping centers with big-box retail stores are in the southeast part of Stow. From early June through early October, the Stow Community Farmers Market takes place in the parking lot of the Community Church of Stow on Pilgrim Drive on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Kent State University Airport
Kent State University Airport is on the southeast side of Stow, catering to small private aircraft. The university owns it and offers flight training for college students and the public. Commercial flights are available at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, about 35 miles to the northwest. The smaller Akron-Canton Airport, 20 miles to the south. State Route 8 is a four-lane highway leading north to the south suburbs of Cleveland and south toward Akron. Public bus transportation is provided by Akron Metropolitan Regional Transit Authority and Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority, or PARTA for short, based in Kent.
