Lake Jackson
Outdoor recreation, whether Lake Jackson is full or not
Whether or not the lake has water, people use it for recreation. At Jackson View Park, people walk through the grass and enjoy wide-open vistas. Kids play on the playground and people stroll along the wooden docks with their dogs. When there’s water, people fish and put their boats in the lake. The Lake Jackson Mounts Archaeological State Park features wooded hiking trails and six out of seven known Native American temple mounds from centuries ago. Dogs run freely at the fenced-in Leon County Dog Park, which connects to J. Lee Vause Park, with its playground, wooded pathways and picnic areas.Grassy home lots in subdivisions
Lake Jackson is where people move if they want a home near the lake for not a lot of money, says Nedeau. “It’s mostly older homes on the northwest side of Tallahassee and a little more affordable,” she says. “You can live not too far from lake and be able to afford something and maybe have a little bit of acreage.” Single-family homes, like ranch-style houses, contemporary homes and traditional builds, sit within subdivisions with association fees for maintenance. Some houses have views of the lake, which is so shallow that it sometimes looks like it’s just a marsh. Home prices range from $150,000 for an older townhouse to $850,000 for a modern house near the water.Stores along U.S. Highway 27 like Publix and Walmart
Lake Jackson has a country feel, but it’s also minutes away from all amenities like supermarkets and service businesses. Retailers like Starbucks, Walgreens and Walmart Supercenter sit along U.S. Highway 27, and so does Publix, a Florida institution. Neighbors can eat fresh fish inside the dining room at Wahoo Seafood Grill while listening to live music, order concrete mixers through the drive-thru window at the nearby Culver’s and drink sweet tea from Chick-fil-A. The Centre of Tallahassee mall sits along Highway 27. Neighbors go to the mall’s movie theater and peruse the bookshelves at Barnes & Noble.Leon High School, the oldest public high school in Florida
Kids in Lake Jackson can attend Leon County Schools, a public school district serving Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Neighborhood schools include Canopy Oaks Elementary School, Augusta Raa Middle School and Leon High School. Leon, which has an A rating from Niche, is the oldest public high school in Florida. Canopy Oaks is rated B-plus by Niche, and Raa is rated B.Interstate 10 runs east-west through the panhandle
Interstate 10 runs south of the neighborhood, linking it to Jacksonville and points west in the Florida panhandle. Downtown Tallahassee is about 20 minutes away, and Tallahassee International Airport is a 25-minute drive.
