Urban, but with historic parks
A lesser-known but equally fascinating attraction in City Center Tampa is Perry Harvey Sr. Park, which includes an array of historical features. At the entrance to the park are large sculptures of a musician, dancer and jukebox, designed to highlight the importance of music to the historic Central Avenue Business District, also known as “The Scrub” and considered to be the Harlem of the South in its heyday. The park also includes the History Walk, a set of “lifetiles” incorporating historic photographs of the neighborhood; Leaders Row, highlighting important figures in the Black community; timeline pavers, which tell the chronological story of the neighborhood; and a statue of Perry Harvey Sr., a co-founder of the Longshoremen’s Union Local 1402, whose headquarters is in City Center Tampa.
