Canterbury
Homes, both ready-to-go and ready to be revamped
Canterbury lots have plenty of elbow room, sitting on tree-shaded lots nearing half an acre. “People really like the large lot sizes you can find in this area,” Barbosa says. “A lot of the homes haven’t been totally renovated yet, unlike a lot of other areas. They like that there’s character and charm and that they can really make it their own or keep the architectural integrity as is.” These established homes start around $250,000, while move-in read Cape Cod and ranch-style homes start around $325,000. Split-level and Colonial Revival homes offering at least 2,000 square feet of space usually go for between $400,000 and $500,000. Canterbury’s most lavish Colonial Revival homes can be found in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, often spanning above 3,000 square feet and including four to five bedrooms. Prices range from $800,000 to above $1 million. There are a few condo and townhouse communities, primarily by Regency Woods and Grayson Hill. Condos and townhouses begin around $200,000 and $260,000, respectively.Henrico County Public Schools and the medical sciences
Canterbury kids might attend one of a few public elementary schools such as Pinchbeck Elementary. They can then move up to Quioccasin Middle School and Mills E. Godwin High School. Pinchbeck Elementary and Quioccasin Middle have C-plus ratings from Niche while Mills E. Godwin High takes home an A. Mills E. Godwin High hosts the Todd Allen Phillips Center for Medical Sciences. Students can embark on a rigorous four-year program which prepares students for careers relating to medical sciences. The Canterbury trails
A ton of activities can be enjoyed at Deep Run Park, like walking down the trails, fishing at the ponds, playing on the soccer fields and biking down the pump track. At the park’s recreation center, locals can play weekly card games like bridge or canasta or participate in weekly sports activities like basketball, pickleball and volleyball during open gym hours. Residents can continue their workouts at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA, which offers a gym, exercise studios, summer camp programs and more. To really feel out in the country, residents can nature watch at Tuckahoe Creek Park. The park’s boardwalk overlooks Tuckahoe Creek and is great for observing herons, hawks and other animals.Shopping centers
A few shopping centers and malls can be found in and around Canterbury. A Food Lion and McDonald’s are located at Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center, while Regency Shopping Mall hosts various retailers and eateries. At Gayton Crossing, residents choose from dining options like The Melting Pot, where residents create and enjoy cheese and chocolate fondues, and Les Crêpes, where residents can enjoy French-inspired cuisine and live music on Bossa Brasil Jazz Nights. If that’s not enough for shopping or dining, locals drive to Short Pump Town Center, a massive open-air shopping mall with over 120 stores that’s less than 15 minutes from most homes.Getting around Canterbury by car or bus
Bus route 79 delivers passengers to a few shopping centers and hospitals in the area, but aside from that, locals won’t find much public transit. Virginia State Route 6 is Canterbury’s primary thoroughfare, heading east toward Richmond and west toward Virginia Route 288. Interstate 64, US Route 250 and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital are all about 5 miles, or 10 minutes, away.Neighborhood and local events
The Canterbury Recreation Association plans several events each summer from ice cream socials to move screenings to adults-only nights with drinks and music. Locals can also head into Richmond for local events like the Carytown Watermelon Festival, a celebration of all things to do with the delicious fruit.
