Wesley Heights
‘Trails galore’ in Wesley Heights
Three sides of the neighborhood are edged by woodlands and parks, crossed by more than 4 miles of trails. “There are trails galore,” Hryniewicki says. Trails wind through Battery Kemble on the west side; soldiers and cannons overlooked the Potomac River from this site during the Civil War, but today it’s a common sledding destination in the winter and dog walking in the warmer months. Other surrounding greenspaces include Wesley Heights Trail and Glover Archbold Park. Rather than exploring parks, locals can explore the modern art galleries at The Kreeger Museum half a mile from Wesley Heights. Residents are within walking distance of National United Methodist Church, a congregation that started in the 1800s with the help of a donation from Abraham Lincoln.Spacious estate homes on the south side
The north side features some condos and townhouses, along with detached homes that were built close together. South of Cathedral Avenue, houses span large, manicured lawns. These estates may be more than 10,000 square feet in size. American University sits to the north, but Hryniewicki says the private school’s thousands of students aren’t a concern for Wesley Heights residents. “All the kids live on campus, and you have a bit of a buffer with Horace Mann Elementary School and National United Methodist Church in between.” Condos prices start around $230,000, while townhouses begin at $825,000. However, detached houses command price tags starting at $1.5 million, with homes selling for as much as $11.5 million.Dining along New Mexico Avenue
Residents can get a meal close to home on New Mexico Avenue. A pair of mixed-use buildings sit along the street, housing restaurants such as Chef Geoff’s. The refined American eatery is known for its 32-ounce beer mugs. Locals can also stop along the avenue to grab coffee from Starbucks or sundries from Walgreens. Grocery runs may require a mile-long trip to Whole Foods Market. Specialists and emergency care doctors are less than 2 miles from Wesley Heights at Sibley Memorial Hospital.MacArthur High students learn at new campus
Neighborhood public schools are overseen by District of Columbia Public Schools. Some children are close enough to walk to Horace Mann Elementary School, which gets an A-minus from Niche and has been named a National Blue Ribbon School five times by the U.S. Department of Education. Students advance from Mann Elementary to Hardy Middle School, graded an A-minus. MacArthur High School opened in 2023, welcoming teens to a new campus with a theater and breakout spaces where students can get individual instruction. Residents live within 2 miles of St. Albans School and The Field School, two private schools graded A-plus by Niche.Events at Horace Mann Elementary
Horace Mann Elementary School opens its campus to neighborhood residents outside of school hours, turning it into a common gathering spot, Hryniewicki says. The PTA’s annual Progressive Dinner raises money for the school with a ticketed evening of cocktails, dinner and dessert.
Proximity to D.C., Maryland and Virginia
One reason Hryniewicki’s firm is based in Wesley Heights is the neighborhood’s central location. Downtown is 4 miles away, with Maryland and Virginia about 2 and 3 miles away respectively. The nearest Metro station is less than 2 miles away in the Tenleytown neighborhood.
