Named after railroad pioneer Albert White, Whitestown is a small but fast-growing community 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis, embracing a modern era of housing developments and shopping centers in a town that loves its rail trail. “It’s a booming area,” says Realtor Shannon Garner with F.C. Tucker Company, who lived in nearby Zionsville. “It’s neat, though, because you have all of these new communities, but it still has that rural feel with preserved woods and farmland. Whitestown is trying to do a good job keeping its integrity as a small town.”

Houses in the Hoosier State
Housing developments have been taking over surrounding farmland for about a decade. They feature a mix of single and two-story Craftsman-style homes on unified quarter-acre lots ranging from around $275,000 to $500,000, including brand-new properties. Those who prefer to live on acres of land with views of sprawling farmland can find homes in all shapes and sizes in the more rural parts of Whitestown, selling for $600,000 to more than $3 million. The heart of Whitestown on and near Main Street is reflective of the town’s roots with smaller bungalows from the early 1900s, which sell for around $200,000 to $250,000.

Access to Indianapolis
The commercial area with all the shopping centers can get especially busy, with the Whitestown Travel Center serving as a stopping point for drivers on Interstate 65. However, the interstate makes it convenient for locals commuting to Indianapolis and other parts of the city.

Where to shop in Whitestown
The small-town section of Whitestown features a few local restaurants, including L.A. Café, a cozy motorcycle-themed café where people come to eat on the string-lit patio. Moontown Brewing Company, set up in an old school, delivers a hip vibe to the community, offering craft beer and a large venue used for concerts and special events. Three miles away on the south side of town is a completely different experience, with shopping centers full of big box retailers and grocery stores. This bustling section of Whitestown has more regional chain restaurants, but is also home to local favorites like Noble Roman’s Craft Pizza & Pub, famous for its homemade root beer, and Harmony Steakhouse, known for its hibachi-style Japanese food.

The Big Four Trail
Whitestown is linked to an old railroad system that now serves as the Big Four Trail. Garner says, “You can hop on your bike or throw on your running shoes and go for the whole day,” says Garner. “No matter the weather, people are always on the trail enjoying the beautiful setting.” The 21-mile rail trail, slated to be more than 50 miles, stretches through woods and farmland, connecting to the communities of Colfax, Thorntown, Lebanon and Zionsville. Locals also frequent Main Street Park for a fun recreational outing, whether to play basketball, tennis or on the playground. It’s a popular spot for sledding in winter, while the warmer summer months make it a fun place to cool off on the splash pad.
