Located on the northern edge of the Delaware state line is the unincorporated Brandywine. "The neighborhood is locally known as Brandywine Hundred. The area was settled in the 1600s but wasn't built up until the 1950s," says Monica Hill, a Realtor with RE/MAX Associates-Wilmington. "The community has larger homes as well as brick constructions. Here, the properties look like salt and pepper sets." This means one street may have ranch styles while the next maintains a similar uniform aesthetic.

Well-maintained homes with green lawns offer a charming curb appeal to the streetscape. You will notice a significant number of split levels and Colonial Revivals among the housing stock. The area also contains town homes inside the adult community of the Village of Brandywine, as well as manufactured dwellings among Winterset Farms. On average, houses within the neighborhood leave the market between $350,000 to $650,000. Buyers can expect most homes larger than 2,000 square feet to list for over $500,000. "Over the years, the standard of living has remained constant. Brandywine properties stayed strong during the 2008 housing crisis. The community has a strong market as well as solid hospitals and schools," Hill says.

Residents are served by the Brandywine School District. The youngest students start their day at Hanby Elementary, considered Delaware's first green school. The building has a rooftop rainwater system, energy-efficient equipment and well-insulated structural walls. Springer Middle School promises academic programs focusing on STEM, Visual Arts and World Languages. Both elementary and middle schools earned a B+ on Niche. Concord High, which received an A-, provides CTE pathways in Business, STEM and Family Consumer Sciences.

The neighborhood has many walking paths that are an open invitation to unwind in the fresh air. But the area also contains a few recreational spaces nearby. Dartmouth Woods Park is a small space with a half-basketball court nestled between homes on Dartmouth Woods Road. Just 5 miles to the west is Brandywine Creek Park; the grounds boast hiking trails, picnic areas and fishing locations spread over 900 acres. Within the neighborhood is the Brandywine Town Center Playground and community center, where locals can enjoy views of the man-made pond.

Many visit the Brandywine Town Center to satisfy day-to-day needs. The commercial hub is considered the heartbeat of the community. You'll find Target and Trader Joe's to restock household supplies, in addition to retailers and restaurants. Inside the sleek interior of Ulysses Gastropub, you can order relaxed bar eats such as pulled pork sandwiches, nachos and poutine. The Hideaway Bar and Grill is a tucked-away local watering hole with live music and line dancing. Locals may also head to the many shops of downtown Wilmington, about 10 miles away.

The community gets its name from Brandywine Creek, named after a popular drink among Dutch settlers due to the water's color. The area contains the Ebright Azimuth marker, denoting an elevation of 447.8 feet above sea level, considered the highest point in the state. Hill says that Brandywine is near major highways with easy commutes to Pennsylvania and New York.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
