Northwest Wilmington
Midcentury charm on the city’s edge
Most of these sizable homes were built in the 1950s and 60s, making them even more desirable. "A lot of the homes have hardwood floors and formal, nice-sized rooms," Proctor says. Houses in the neighborhood start at around $200,000, and the market in Delaware is currently tight. However, prices don't get much higher, as recent sales have topped out at $355,000. Inventory is low across the state, especially in a neighborhood as close to downtown as Northwest, so expect it to be snatched up sooner rather than later.Cutting-edge STEM programs
Highly regarded schools also appeal to many folks looking for a home in the area. Students can attend PS Dupont Middle and Harlan Elementary Schools. Red-brick PS Dupont matches the rest of the neighborhood and is known for its STEM program, technology center, and computer labs. Harlan Elementary School encourages innovation and teaches students about the future with its robotics club. Niche gives the elementary and middle school a C-plus and A rating, respectively. The early experience with technology can also benefit students once they arrive at Concord High School, which Niche gives an A- grade.Award-winning resturants
Northwest is located near several shopping areas, including the Concord Mall, which happens to be the state's second-biggest shopping destination. The Delaware River is less than two miles from the neighborhood, placing residents right by the region's famous riverfront. There are also restaurants close to home, including Wilmington Brew Works. This local favorite is the only production brewery in Wilmington and has a private venue onsite called the Alamo Room that's perfect for private events like birthdays. The building has a Spanish-style exterior and a long front room to sit and enjoy your beverage. Breakfast at Blume won the 2023 Diner's Choice Award from OpenTable. They serve New American cuisine and craft mocktails, and the restaurant is located in the Post House, a Wilmington landmark.Haynes Park and Brandywine Park
Residents can take their dogs or children to Haynes Park within the neighborhood. Surrounded by a screen of tall and leafy trees, visitors play tennis or watch their kids romp at the playground with classmates and other friends. Closer to downtown, the riverfront Brandywine Park features ample walking trails, the Jasper Crane Rose Garden, a dog park and a zoo with lemurs, capybaras and snakes.Bus stops and I-95
Around Northwest Wilmington, folks can board DART First State buses to visit locations downtown or other parts of the city. Wilmington's Amtrak station and I-95 are close to most homes in the neighborhood, so getting around the area is simple. The station's proximity to Philadelphia, South Jersey and Pennsylvania also makes living here convenient for commuters who work outside the city.
