The charming houses in Greendale are spaced on smaller lots.
Suburb feel in the city
Synonymous with a mall that anchored it for decades, Greendale is a residential Worcester neighborhood on the north side of town bordering the suburbs. Single-family homes, chain restaurants and a community college campus exist within its bounds, and Route 12 takes residents and passers-through between Worcester and West Boylston daily. People start their Saturdays with little league games at the neighborhood field, swim in the nearby lake and eat egg rolls considered the best in Worcester. “It tends to be a bit quieter. It borders the quiet side of city, and a quiet town just outside of city. It feels less city-ish,” says Billy McGuiness, co-owner of 1 Worcester Homes and a Worcester native.
There are a variety of home styles in Greendale.
Grassy, hilly streets
Single-family homes like bungalows, ranch-style houses, Cape Cods and colonials line the residential streets of Greendale. Homes sit near each other on small, grassy lots behind wooden fences, sidewalks and stone walls. Some streets are sloped, so walkers get a good workout even on routine strolls. Prices range from about $270,000 to $616,000.
Quinsigamond Community College offers an architectural beautification to Greendale.
Artsy schools
Kids in Greendale can attend Worcester Public Schools. Some neighborhood kids attend Thorndyke Road School, Burncoat Middle School and Burncoat High School. All three schools have a C-plus rating from Niche. The Burncoat schools are known for their fine arts magnet programs. Kids can specialize in theater, dance, music and visual art.
Quinsigamond Community College in Greendale has a walking track open to the public.
Little league games
A draw to Greendale is Quinsigamond Community College, a local educational institution. The public can take classes at QCC or use its running track. Little league games happen at Kendrick Field, which has a playground, a basketball court and a multi-purpose field. The Greendale Family Branch YMCA hugs the north side of nearby Indian Lake. “The Greendale YMCA has a big stretch of the waterfront,” says McGuiness. “The lake has a boat launch, a public park and a public swimming section.”
Greendale is home to Quinn's Irish Pub which is open for lunch and dinner.
Irish pubs and egg rolls
Greendale connects to downtown Worcester via its main thoroughfare, West Boylston Street. Restaurants like Quinn’s Irish Pub line the roadway. The pub pours Guinness and fries fish and chips in a relaxed atmosphere. Live musical performances happen at Greendale’s Pub, and on the weekends, people crowd outside Lou Roc’s Diner to get a seat. The family-owned Eggroll Lady and Fish Shack is revered citywide for its crispy and juicy egg rolls, fried fish and homemade tartar sauce. The neighborhood was once home to the Greendale Mall, an indoor shopping center that had its heyday back when malls were still in fashion. The now-defunct mall will be replaced with an Amazon distribution center.
The Greendale neighborhood is flanked by the community college and Indian Lake.
Commuting made easy
Greendale sits east of Interstate 190, a roadway connecting Worcester to the north central region of Massachusetts. Interstate 290 runs south of the neighborhood. The major Worcester roadway connects with Interstate 495 and the Massachusetts Turnpike. Driving to Marlborough takes about 25 minutes, and Boston takes an hour. Commuters can take the train from Union State in Worcester into Boston in about an hour and 15 minutes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
