The Alberta Arts District brings Concordia to life

Concordia is a vibrant pocket of Northeast Portland, perhaps best known for Alberta Street, which is lined with galleries and trendy local businesses. While the district reverberates with energy — especially during the monthly Last Thursday art walk — Concordia is otherwise a quiet neighborhood with walkable streets and access to green space.

Neighborhood vibe and community events

Concordia is part of the vibrant artistic community centered around Alberta Street. Several galleries, a fabric store and an artisan stationery store are just a few of the businesses that define the eastern stretch of the Alberta Arts District. While Alberta Street has a perpetual hum to it, the area really comes alive every Last Thursday of the month with gallery opening parties and indoor performances at other local businesses. What started as a counterpart to the better-known First Thursday event on the other side of the Willamette River in the Pearl District in 1997, Last Thursdays helped establish the area as a destination for creatives and art enthusiasts. Now, the city shuts down 15 blocks of Alberta Street for the event when it migrates outside every June through August.

  • Craftsman-inspired, new-construction single-family homes from the 2010s through the 2020s.

Shopping, dining and art in Concordia

There’s no shortage of trendy places to check out in Concordia, especially when it comes to Alberta Street, 42nd Avenue or Killingsworth Street. “That’s the thing I love about Concordia,” says Kellie Kotlar, a broker with Proud Realty, LLC, who has about a decade of experience. “It’s one of those neighborhoods that, if you live there, you have endless options of where you can take your guest to.”

Home to the Alberta Arts District, the neighborhood is known for its creative community, but it has thriving shopping and dining scenes as well. Beyond the iconic pink door at Gabbiano’s, you’ll find authentic Italian American food, craft cocktails with cheeky names and a chic setting that brings it all together. Across the street, Expatriate is a fashion-forward cocktail lounge with a custom, ornamental bar and elevated “drinking snacks.”

Things to do in Concordia

Other entertainment venues include the Alberta Rose Theatre, which opened in 1927 as a movie theater. It has since transitioned into a live performance venue, hosting musicians, circus acts, comedians and aerial dance shows.

The McMenamins Kennedy School has also been repurposed from an early-20th-century elementary school into a hotel with a restaurant, multiple bars, a movie theater in the school’s old auditorium and soaking pool, a ceramic heated area in a private courtyard encompassed by gardens. “Residents automatically get free entry to use the soaking tub,” Kotlar says. “If you have a valid ID with an address that shows you live in the neighborhood, you can just go in for free. It’s one of those things that people do think about when they’re buying their house.”

Fernhill Park has several athletic fields, a horseshoe pit and an off-leash dog area. Its playground equipment was updated in 2018, along with the addition of a splash pad.

Walkability and bike-ability in Concordia

Concordia pairs well with a pedestrian lifestyle. There are sidewalks, eateries on several neighborhood streets and two parks within a mile and a half of each other. Most notably, Concordia includes the east end of the Alberta Arts District, a buzzy area with restaurants, art galleries, entertainment and heavy foot traffic. The neighborhood is also convenient for cyclists, with quiet streets and a Nike BIKETOWN bike share station on Alberta Street.

Commuting and street parking

United States Route 309 runs through the north of Concordia, eventually connecting to Interstate 5. Commuters can follow the interstate to Downtown Portland, about 8 miles away. However, drivers should note that not all homes have garages, and street parking may be scarce, especially near the busy Alberta Arts District. Several TriMet buses stop throughout the neighborhood, taking passengers across the city, and the Portland International Airport is less than 7 miles away.

Schools that serve Concordia

Concordia is divided into two school zones; children may either attend Faubion or Vernon school, both serving grades kindergarten through eight. Students from both schools consolidate at McDaniel or Jefferson High School, a highly rated magnet school. Jefferson High offers on-site dual-credit courses through its partnership with Portland Community College, a three-year biomedical and health sciences program and a dance program, which was established in 1975 and includes two student companies. All three schools are part of Portland Public Schools, one of the largest districts in the Pacific Northwest.
