Greek Mythology is a familiar subject to Tina Canaris. While many people have read a thing or two about the gods and goddesses in history books, Tina writes the subject every time she signs her full name, Athena. No, it is not a familiar name, but Tina is not a common individual either. The daughter of humble Cypriot immigrants, she was named Athena to inspire her to follow the goddess' patron values - good counsel and wisdom. "My folks gently encouraged but also had high expectations for me. I think back on the values of fair play and the belief in putting the needs of others first! I now realize how important those lessons were."
Growing up as a first generation American, Tina enjoyed the perfect blend of the old country and the new. She was Athena at home and Tina at school.: "The culture, the language and the diet weren't exactly American," says Tina. "But we learned the values of the old and new." It was The Best of Both Worlds. I wouldn't have traded anything for my childhood experiences, although it was very difficult at times." Tina was born in Brooklyn but raised on Long Island. Her ancestry was from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.
"The values I was taught growing up were the elements that make me who I am today. This is my identity." Tina says she was fortunate in that she had parents who assimilated and were proud they became American citizens. They respected people's differences, yet at the same time held to their traditions. They taught her to strive to reach the "American Dream".
After earning her degree in business administration and education, she and her husband, Steve, owned a new home construction company in the 1980's. It was there that she received her first lessons in real estate. She found that helping families with their moves was rewarding. "I knew what went into making a home," she says. She also knew what it took for a family to make the decision to move.
In her career, Tina uses the values of patience and hard work with everyone she serves. Tina is known throughout her community as the one to rely on for honest, caring service. Her reputation is backed by more than 24 years of closed sales in her marketplace.
