David Moe

David grew up on a lakefront resort in the Park Rapids area and started his resort training at age 10. His parent’s resort had 10 cabins, a swimming beach, small fishing boats and a cozy lodge with a pinball machine – everything a kid could want right? Determined to do something different – he declared to his dad “I would never want to run a resort”.

While working as a mechanical engineer in California he got a master’s degree at Stanford University and took a number of entrepreneurship classes. These classes showed him that there are lots of different ways to solve business problems and to maximize your return. In Wisconsin he worked on the next generation of supercomputers, but decided he wanted to apply his entrepreneurial desire to be own boss. After researching lots of opportunities and after a lot of introspection, he decided maybe his mom and dad weren’t so dumb after all.

In 1997, he and his wife bought Clamshell Beach on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes in the Brainerd area. They applied their entrepreneurial skills and transformed the resort from a small 10 cabin resort with 14 mobile homes into a fractional condominium resort with 18 new cabins, which had rentals, 85 fractional owners, a property management and association management company. They sold their interest in the resort after twenty three fabulous summers.
