Ellis Grossman, a Charleston native, attended Academic Magnet High School and was an avid wrestler. So much, he was all set to apply to the Citadel when his mom suggested a different path. For Ellis, considering medicine was the only path for his future, so he thought. What he found was that his true love was the restaurant business; particularly in obtaining real estate and making a masterpiece. Black Bean Co., named for the superfood, was started by Ellis Grossman in 2010. Chef Ellis Grossman was inspired by the need to bring health food to the fast food business. The restaurant reflects Grossman's years of experience in the fast food industry. Ellis attended the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College. After earning his degree in culinary arts and business technology, Ellis chose to take a different approach than most and jumped directly into the fast food industry. He was Director of Operations for Bojangles' and later Vice President, while also serving as Chairman of the Board at Culinary Institute of Charleston where he also taught culinary classes.
Ellis' food philosophy is based on developing complete meals based on portion size to give your body what it needs to fuel you through the day. The goal was for customers to know they are getting a great and complete meal without the need to cut, count, or even think about calories.
Ellis carried his love of fresh ingredients directly into Black Bean Co.'s overall mission. While owning five restaurants, Grossman was farming 35 acres. He sold to all the Restaurants in Charleston with the help of Limehouse Produce. He found inspiration through his mentor Shawn Thackeray who taught him the true art of farming and farm maintenance. He taught him not only how to turn a wrench but how to provide from the earth to the sole. Whether it be ingredients made fresh daily, compostable packaging or the green decor, Ellis finds that it's important to extend his knowledge and experience of what sustainability can truly aspire to be.
After Black Bean Co., he wanted to continue his mission of helping people in a new sector. In 2017, Ellis chose the path of Real Estate with the mission to help the community with their current real estate needs but more importantly, their real estate investment goals of the future. His mission is to build lifetime relationships and give 10+ service to all of his clients, customers, vendors and all the people within the community. He can't wait to show you what makes the Charleston Area the number one city in the world.
