Why Live in Wells-Goodfellow

On the northwestern edge of St. Louis city limits is Wells/Goodfellow. The neighborhood's legacy as a respite for St. Louis' 20th-century working class still exists in trace amounts with remnants like manufacturing plants that once provided tens of thousands of jobs to neighborhood residents. The plants shut down decades ago, which has led to a population decline in the neighborhood, but efforts are being made to bring people back. “Right now, most homes are being purchased by investors,” says Renee Reed, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty, who sells homes in the neighborhood. “The city offers grant money to those who invest in that area, so they’re coming in and fixing up a lot of the homes.” Wells/Goodfellow features blocks of single-family houses built between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some are nearly touching, while others are next to rows of empty lots. They include many shotgun houses, Dutch Colonials and smaller bungalows and Cape Cods. Though the neighborhood has more than 6,000 residents, many homes sit vacant and are in need of repair. These sell for around $10,000 to $15,000. Homes that are move-in ready range from $30,000 to $50,000. Reed says,
