One of Sarasota’s oldest neighborhoods, Bayou Oaks is diverse and home to people from all walks of life, including students, artists and lifelong residents. The neighborhood gets its name from Whitaker Bayou and the large oak trees that shade the streets. "It’s a mix of housing for sure,” says Margot Vigar, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who vlogs about Sarasota neighborhoods on her YouTube channel. “But it’s generally very affordable for the area. You can really get some deals there.” With a location between two colleges, an airport, and a major thoroughfare with shopping and dining, Bayou Oaks has steadily increased in popularity in the past few years. Bayou Oaks consists of several side streets branching off the main thoroughfare, Bradenton Road. Homes sit on median-sized lots of less than a quarter acre. "Not everyone keeps up their properties there, but the community is getting better all the time,” Vigar says.
