Why Live in Saratoga Springs
Saratoga Springs is a city fueled by horsepower. Horse racing is a major driver of the economy in this Upstate New York community, thanks to the more than 150-year-old Saratoga Race Course and live harness racing at the Saratoga Casino Hotel, which opened in 2016. Horse owners, trainers and racing fans are drawn to the city. Yet the sport isn't the only reason people choose to live in Saratoga Springs.
"It's a small, very historic city with a vibrant downtown," says Kate Mastrangelo, associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Blake, Realtors, who grew up in Saratoga. "It's surrounded by beautiful parks, and we have the racetrack, so it's always been a popular spot for second homes. Growing up, it was the August place to be, and it was very quiet in the wintertime. It's never quiet anymore."
For year-round residents, other draws to the city include a walkable downtown district with local businesses, historic Victorian homes and access to the great outdoors, including the two dozen mineral springs that give the city its name. "The area offers a robust jobs market, a classic American downtown, numerous natural springs and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center," says
