Waynflete School is a coed private school that enrolls students in preschool through 12th grade. Located in Portland’s West End, Waynflete first opened its doors in 1897 through the stewardship of Agnes Lowell and Caroline Crisfield. The two had developed a fascination with William Waynflete, a teacher and statesman from England. During the school’s first year of operation, Waynflete served only 49 students. The school quickly began to thrive and grew through the early 1900s, adopting a progressive approach to education with an emphasis on the arts. The school consists of the Lower School, the Middle School and the Upper School. Students in the Lower School spend their first two years at the school with the same advisor, which creates consistency for students and fosters strong relationships between educators and caregivers. With a mission to offer a well-rounded education to all students, athletics are an integral part of the Waynflete School experience. Students can choose from a wide range of team sports including cross-country, soccer, golf, rowing, basketball, Nordic skiing, hockey, swimming, baseball and lacrosse. The school also has flourishing visual and performing arts programs, which include instruction and extracurriculars in dance, music, theater and several visual arts concentrations. Despite its growth over the years, the Waynflete School prides itself on being a tight-knit community devoted to nurturing its students as individuals with different educational needs and learning styles.

Waynflete has been wonderful for our children. Our two boys are now in second year at RISD and it's largely due to the inspiration and support they received at Waynflete. It's simply a great place to learn. Our daughter is thriving in high school there too and we're sure she'll be inspired by the support she gets from the school to excel at whatever she ends up choosing to pursue too. From the teachers to the admissions to the administration one can only be grateful to what is created there every day for children - meaningful and positive learning.

Our daughter started as a sophomore after moving from PA. Waynflete is second to none in onboarding kids and parents. She started the year right away with friends and deeply engaged in the school's activities. She loves the highly diverse student body and the very inclusive and accepting culture. (I don't understand the "B" score for diversity.) On the flip side some of the newer teachers don't reflect the Waynflete philosophy and culture as well. That said, I'm really glad we landed there and wish I had had an opportunity to attend a school as supportive and soulful as Waynflete when I was a kid.

Waynflete is a great school academically and socially ! But my parents and I got screwed over when I was supposed to enter the ninth grade. I understand that the tuition is a little higher than middle school, but they gave us a very small amount of financial aid even when we were making way less than the past couple years. The admissions team only gives you a decent amount of money if you make well under 20,000 dollars a year. So if you're a middle class family, you're screwed.

Our three kids have had an exceptional 1.5 years thus far at Waynflete and we have excellent things to say about the teaching staff, administration, and culture that has been built at the school. Every teacher is intensely committed and focused on seeing students not only grow from an academic persp...

Waynflete is a great school. But it's class sizes are often bigger than advertised, more like some public school sizes in the area. Maybe not the personal education they advertise. Doesn't feel totally worth the tuition.

We have sent three children through Waynflete from EC-3 to 12th grade and cannot imagine another school anywhere in the country that could have better met each of their unique needs. The teaching staff, to the person, is world class. The community is supportive and caring. The facilities are state o...

Waynflete was an incredible school even before the COVID-19 pandemic. But the seamless transition to online learning has far exceeded my expectations. The administration prepared teachers to move courses online the week before school was even canceled, providing them with training and support needed...
