Sudden Valley is a planned community on the western shore of Lake Whatcom. “It was originally developed as a vacation spot for Canadians,” says Julian Friedman, the broker and owner of Julian & Company Powered by Muljat Group, who was born and raised in Bellingham. “As Bellingham became less affordable, most of the cabins were turned into year-round dwellings.” Although many Bellingham attractions are within a 10-mile drive, the community provides an array of services and amenities of its own. There are a couple of restaurants, a market, a library, a marina and multiple parks. “Many people absolutely love the solace from city life and access to nature,” Friedman says. Sudden Valley’s residential streets wind around the hilly terrain, and private driveways branch off the edges between tall cedars and Douglas firs. “The topography really varies. Lookout Mountain actually blocks a lot of the sun for some homes,” Friedman says. “Properties closer to the lake are usually flatter, and there’s more sun.
