A quiet lifestyle in eastern Queens

Tarleton Garden finds itself on a curved, crescent-shaped road lined with brick-clad apartment towers, attached duplexes and single-family bungalows. Aptly named for its arced shape, the oak-tree-lined street is sandwiched between two others just like it, insulating it from all the hubbub one might find further out along Queens Boulevard. Upon consideration, the location feels like a mellow Long Island suburb or somewhere sleepy, tucked away from the cacophony of the city. Completed in 1959, the seven-story building is sheathed in red brick and punctuated by brown-framed casement windows. The co-op offers accessibly priced apartments with low monthly fees on a conveniently located side street in Briarwood.

Efficient midcentury floor plans with large kitchens

Seventy units across seven stories range from one- to two-bedrooms. Residences rarely come on the market, only once or twice yearly. Completed in 1959, the apartments were designed with open layouts and large windows to maximize space and natural light. All homes, regardless of size, have one bathroom. Ranging 700 to 800 square feet, one-bedrooms have an eat-in kitchen, a large living room (approximately 20 feet long) and a primary bedroom with two full-size closets; the last sale was for $285,000 in the second quarter of 2023. Spanning between 950 and 1000 square feet, two-bedrooms have a formal dining room, a massive (nearly 30 feet long) living room and a walk-in closet in a salon-like foyer; the last sale netted $349,000 in the second quarter of 2024.

Basic amenities include a parking garage

As is typical for its era, the building only has the essential services that count. The co-op has a live-in storage lockers on the lower level. The same subterranean floor houses the parking garage, which offers competitive monthly rates (and is currently waitlisted). Meanwhile, a landscaped courtyard behind the co-op provides a quiet outdoor space with wooden picnic tables and benches.

A quiet, tree-lined eastern Queens neighborhood

Briarwood is primarily residential, dotted with oak trees and brick-clad apartment towers. Most side streets are known for grassy lawns and driveways leading to single- and multi-family homes (many of which are either one of three typologies: Tudors, bungalows and colonials). A few local haunts on Queens Avenue include barbeque at Queens Bully, Portuguese classics at O Lavrador and tap beer at the Dart Inn. While there are no parks in the immediate vicinity, there are 65 acres of green space at Maple Grove Cemetery; the grounds are well-maintained and ideal for strolling. Residents can shop at local grocery stores, including Ideal Food Basket, Key Food and Trade Fair.

A bit of a schlep

Living in this quiet residential enclave comes at the cost of being a bit remote. One nearby subway station, Briarwood, services the F train. A mile away, there are multiple transit hubs in Jamaica. Sutphin Boulevard–Archer Avenue–JFK Airport station offers the E, J, and Z trains and connects to the AirTrain at Jamaica Station. The major LIRR station in Jamaica provides access to trains that service Grand Central Station and Penn Station (approximately 20 minutes away). For those traveling by car, major thoroughfares — Grand Central Parkway, Long Island Expressway and Van Wyck Expressway — make getting around Queens easy and to Brooklyn and Manhattan manageable.
