A distinguished, time-honored co-op designed by Rosario Candela in Turtle Bay

Over the decades, some of New York City’s — and the world’s — most iconic characters have lived on Beekman Place, including princesses, Rockefellers and actors alike. Attracted to the street’s prestigious co-ops and trend-setting, sophisticated crowd, everyone from Greta Garbo and Gloria Vanderbilt to Henry Kissinger have called it their home at one point in time — and to this day, Beekman Place still holds a kind of mystique in the city. 2 Beekman Place is one such co-op, maintaining a level of old school refinement for over 100 years, while still moving with the times to attract contemporary buyers.

Designed by Rosaria Candela, who also designed 834 Fifth Avenue — considered one of the famous Italian American architect’s greatest apartment designs — the Art Deco building that is 2 Beekman Place opened in the early 1930s.Originally, it consisted of 98 units, although many have been combined over the years, making the number closer to 81 today. Across its 18 stories, prospective shareholders can find white-glove service, and spacious prewar layouts and design cues. And despite being located nearly next door to the United Nations, the tree-lined street of Beekman Place provides a unique serenity and sense of exclusivity for residents.

Spacious, light-filled units at surprisingly accessible price points

Given the co-op’s standing, many shareholders have updated their units to include high-end appliances in the realm of Wolf ranges, Sub-Zero and Miele. Perhaps the biggest draw of the residences are the 9-plus-foot, beamed ceilings, which create an airy feel, as well as the large living spaces. Many units contain separate dining nooks, which can be converted to office spaces, while some may offer double exposure views beyond the high-grade casement windows. One unique feature of prewar buildings that continues to be a draw for buyers is that many bathrooms also contain a window, which lets in desirable natural light. Within these spaces, buyers will find an array of different finishes, depending on the seller, some of which include basic subway or mosaic tile work and tubs.

Although co-ops are generally lower in cost than condos, prospective buyers may be surprised at just how low the prices are for units at 2 Beekman Place. Studios can go as low as $445,000, while one-bedrooms have sold for around $550,000 in recent years. Two-bedrooms run between $1 million to $1.29 million, while three-bedrooms garner around $2.3 million. Monthly maintenance varies, but a studio can run around $1,700 per month, while two-bedrooms are just over $2,800, with one-bedrooms somewhere in the middle.

A pet-friendly building with all the perks of a white-glove co-op

Residents have access to a small rooftop deck that offers exceptional views of the Midtown area and East River, complete with furnishings and planters. Building services include a 24-hour doorman, live-in super, resident manager and elevator operator. To some, the lobby may look a bit dated, but it includes original stonework and vintage tiling that resonate with the Art Deco period. One rare perk is that although NYC is already known for its decent water quality, the building includes a Culligan water filtration system. Up to 50 percent financing is permitted, and residents can take advantage of reduced rates for electricity, internet and cable services. In the basement, residents can also access private storage.

Just a stone’s throw away from the East River and the United Nations

Turtle Bay is steeped in history and prestige, having been the choice locale for notable figures over the years. Dining is admittedly a bit limited in the area, but residents can find several restaurants one avenue west along Second Avenue, including Italian eats at La Pecora Bianca Midtown. The East River Esplanade, including the Peter Detmold Park & Dog Run, is also just one avenue away. For those working at the United Nations, the entrance to the headquarters is less than a seven minute walk, while other office buildings surrounding Grand Central station are a 17 minute walk away. For groceries, Morton Williams Supermarkets is close by, as well as Amish Market, which focuses on fresh, gourmet foods. Access to the subway, however, is a bit cumbersome, as the 6 train, located on 51st Street and Lexington Avenue, is four avenues away from the building.
