A Depression-era gem with period features and past notable residents
When the 20-story building at 411 West End Ave. debuted in 1936, it did so with an inherent boldness. Designed by renowned architect George F. Pelham, 104-unit project rose during the height of the Great Depression and was regarded as a harbinger of recovery.
The high-rises' streamlined Art Moderne architectural style also represented a break from the popular and less-reserved flourishes of the Art Deco aesthetic. Its cream-colored brick facade features sleek stainless-steel bands that run along the top of the building and cascade vertically, terminating just above the third floor. The top of the co-op's stone entrance is similarly framed in gleaming steel, and the threshold leads to a compact but chic step-down lobby with preserved period details of stone columns and a terrazzo floor with an inlaid design. Interiors promised bold new features as well, such as sunken living rooms, bathrooms in colored tile, Venetian blinds, glass-enclosed tubs and stall showers in every bathroom.
The building attracted well-established professionals and residents of note. Early renters included the owner of a dry-cleaning plant in Edgewater, NJ, a furrier and the head of a wholesale cotton firm. By the 1950s, "The Thin Man" actress Myrna Loy had moved in, as had comedian and actor Phil Leeds, known later for his appearances in "Rosemary's Baby" and "Everybody Loves Raymond." A more infamous tenant was Meyer Lansky, sometimes referred to as "The Mob's Accountant," and an associate of organized crime titans Charlie "Lucky" Luciano and Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. His child, Sandra Lansky Lombardo, recalled the building in her 2012 book, “Daughter of the King: Growing Up in Gangland.” "We moved...to a grand Art Deco high-rise at 411 West End Avenue. The feature I remember most was the sunken living room, like the dance floor on an ocean liner."
Sunken living rooms, circular galleries and some outdoor spaces on upper floors
Homes in the co-op include one- to four-bedrooms. One-bedrooms up to 900 square feet list for $740,000 and up, and two-bedrooms measuring as much as 1,700 square feet sell for $2.5 million or less. Three-bedrooms ask $2.6 million and higher, while four-bedrooms as large as 3,350 square feet are priced at $4.5 million or more.
Homes' sunken living rooms have iron railings, large windows, beamed ceilings and oak floors with maple inlays. Select units feature large and striking circular entry galleries, and some include wood-burning fireplaces. Units on higher floors offer private outdoor space at the building's setbacks. Apartments have numerous closets, many oversized or walk-in. Views include the Hudson River, residential blocks and Riverside Park, and some homes have wraparound corner windows, made possible by what was, in 1936, newly developed cantilever construction. Gas appliances and washer/dryers are not permitted in the building.
Full-time door attendant, live-in super and shared laundry
The co-op has a full-time door attendant and live-in super. The building has shared laundry facilities, a bike room and storage is available. Pets are allowed. Keller Williams NYC agent Melissa Leifer, who has done business in the building, reports that the co-op permits residents to do renovations, even extensive ones. "They're flexible. They allow combinations," she says.
Far west side near Riverside Park and shopping
Riverside Park is one block away and playgrounds and athletic courts are nearby. Leifer notes that the far west location offers relative affordability while still being close to major conveniences. "You get more for your money. It's very accessible," she says. Zabar's is a block away at 80th Street. Restaurants and nightlife options on Broadway and Amsterdam include Chama Mama, Miriam's, the Beacon Theatre and multiplex AMC at 84th Street. The Children's Museum of Manhattan is less than a 10-minute walk from the co-op.
Five subway trains within walking distance and major highways to the west
The 1 and 2 trains stop at 79th Street, two blocks away, and the A, B and C trains at 81st Street and the American Museum of Natural History can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot. For travel by car, Riverside Drive is a block west, and Route 9A can be accessed at 79th Street Street for connections to Manhattan's west side, New Jersey, and the Bronx. LaGuardia Airport can be reached in about 25 minutes.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
