A midcentury co-op on a prime Brooklyn Heights block

Surrounded by the 19th-century townhouses and mansions of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, the 10-story 1953 blonde brick co-op at 60 Remsen Street does look a little out of place on its block. “It’s the most modern building on Remsen between Hicks and Henry, but you’re looking out onto Grace Court and all the carriage houses from the 1800s, Grace Church and mansions. It’s a very well-appointed block,” says Bond New York agent Todd Simmons, who has done business in the 76-unit co-op. Beyond the lovely views — from the vantage point of a residence or the building’s singular, large roof deck — living in the midcentury building puts residents in the heart of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, an area that is as charming as it is convenient. “It’s one-and-a-half blocks from the beginning of the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, which is one of the nicest views of the New York City skyline you can find,” says Simmons. “It’s a slightly more contemporary building with all the bucolic beauty of the tree-lined Brooklyn Heights to walk around in. It’s the best of both worlds in that way.”

Studios to three-bedrooms with solid construction

Homes at 60 Remsen include studios to a few three-bedrooms. Studios, some of which have an alcove layout, can be up to 505 square feet, with prices starting at $365,000. One-bedrooms 400 square feet or more list for $700,000 and up, and two bedrooms as large as 1,100 square feet ask $870,000 and higher. Three-bedrooms are priced at $1.6 million and up. “Some are combined units and can be well north of 2,000 square feet,” says Simmons. Most homes feature wood parquet floors and Simmons notes the concrete construction makes for “a really solid building.”

A roof deck with incredible views and essential services

“The building has a roof deck with 360-degree views of the city, multiple bridges, the open bay, Downtown Brooklyn skyline, out to Jersey City looking up Manhattan. It’s really something,” says Simmons. “And it’s not super utilized. You would think it would be jam-packed all the time but it’s not. That right there separates it from other buildings in the area. Even if a building does have a roof deck, you don’t see that view [from it].” The co-op has a 24-hour door attendant and live-in super on call. There is also a laundry room, bike room and storage. The compact but handsome lobby was recently renovated, and the hallways were updated before the pandemic. Pets, guarantors and parents buying for children are permitted.

Steps from shopping, dining and prime public spaces

The co-op’s location offers a unique mix of Brooklyn Heights’ picturesque residential blocks, public spaces and incredible convenience. “The location is phenomenal. That’s what you’re paying for,” says Keller Williams NYC agent Melissa Leifer, who does business in the area. The main drag of Brooklyn Heights, Montague Street, is one block north. Businesses along the commercial corridor include specialty food stores, coffee shops, restaurants, salons, independent bookstore Books Are Magic, a Housing Works Thrift Shop and the Brooklyn Cat Cafe. The closest grocery store, a Key Food Supermarket, is around the corner. Brooklyn Bridge Park is a few blocks to the west and Borough Hall is three blocks east. Simmons notes that several notable schools are nearby, including the PS 8 and private schools The Packer Collegiate Institute and St. Ann’s School.

Excellent connection via numerous trains, bridges and roads

Public transit options are numerous, with 10 subway lines, including the N, R, W, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C and F trains, all within a 10-minute walk from the building. The Long Island Rail Road at Atlantic Terminal can be reached in about five minutes by train. Commuters to Wall Street can make the trip in about 15 minutes and Midtown Manhattan is a 30-minute ride. The Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and Interstate 278 are nearby and easily accessible by car. LaGuardia Airport can be reached in about 30 minutes.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
