Historical grandeur in Jackson Heights

Flanked by tall stone vases in carved brick walls on both sides of the entrance, the Allendale was designed by architect Joshua Tabachnik in a distinctive neo-Georgian style. The 83-unit residence was one of the many garden communities he designed in Jackson Heights. The six-story Allendale is in the middle of the block past 35th Avenue, a red-brick building located on a tree-lined street of neatly manicured apartments with similar features. The recessed entry has a green awning highlighted by a stone trim exterior. The prewar building has a live-in superintendent, laundry room, bicycle storage and a magnificent garden in the Jackson Heights Historic District rich with history and iconic architecture.

Garden community design

The spacious front lobby features crown moldings and arched entryways. These are elegant details found in prewar buildings, notes Armen Meschian, licensed associate broker at CORE Real Estate and a Jackson Heights specialist who has worked in the area for more than 15 years. The Allendale was originally built to be luxury rentals in 1937, Meschian says. The height of the ceiling and the fireplace were designed to give a “wow” effect, he adds. Like many of the apartment buildings in Jackson Heights, The Allendale became a co-op in the 1980s, according to the agent. Today, residents “Like the garden, they like having access to storage,” he notes. “The concept of the development of Jackson Heights, it was going to be a garden community,” Meschian says. Beyond the grand lobby is a courtyard where residents can enjoy the common outdoor space. The Allendale is among the prewar buildings with a private courtyard or shared garden space that’s part of Jackson Height’s Historic District. In addition to the garden apartments, the Historic District feature homes and row houses in myriad architectural styles, including Art Deco, Italianate, Tudor and Georgian Revival. The tree-lined sidewalks complement the stately apartment buildings and the homes. The neighborhood was built in the early 1900s and named after John C. Jackson, a wealthy landowner. Buildings such as The Allendale were designed to have gardens and green space, a breath of fresh air from the living spaces of Manhattan back in the 1930s.

Prewar interior details

Inside the units, the prewar details prevail at the Allendale. Most notable are the separate standup showers of that era with a separate bathtub in the same bathroom. All units have 9-foot ceilings. The price of the units at the Allendale depends on the condition. A one-bedroom ranges from $350,000 to $400,000 while two-bedroom units range from high $400,000s to $600,000s. The location of the unit also impacts pricing. The front facing coops get more light and may be more desirable to some. The back facing units have a garden view. The layout of the spaces is very thoughtful, a hallmark of Tabachnik’s design, Meschian says. The lobby area of the units also doubles as a dining space. The bedrooms are spacious and while closets may be smaller by modern standards, they are sizeable for prewar buildings, he adds.

Diversity and culture abound in Jackson Heights

Much has been written about Jackson Heights’ ethnic food scene. Just along Roosevelt Avenue, options include Cositas Ricas Colombian Restaurant, Gorkhali Nepalese Restaurant and Om Wok, a Tibetan restaurant. Closer to Allendale on 37th Avenue and 81st Street is Jahn’s, a stalwart of a diner and ice cream parlor that has served Jackson Heights for more than six decades. It’s where friends and family gather for weekend brunch or where local little leagues go after a game to celebrate with ice cream. This is the last remaining Jahn’s that once had almost 30 locations in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Founded in 1897, it’s known for its Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae with over a dozen scoops of ice cream.

Farmers Market and shopping

Stores, bakeries and markets are within walking distance of the Allendale. The Jackson Heights Green Market at Travers Park at 76th Street and 34th Avenue operates on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering produce, baked goods and other treats. Supermarkets within walking distance include a CTown at 85-08 37th Ave. Check out the shops on 82nd Street between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue for apparel needs or fast casual eats. There are chain stores such as Carter’s and Skechers. Popeye’s and Chick-fil-A have outposts on that stretch just two blocks away. A little-known fact about Jackson Heights is that it is a destination for beauty bargains. Right near Allendale on 37th Avenue and 80th Street are beauty salons including Manat Threading and Nila’s Eyebrow Center that offer $5 brow threading. That’s more than half off Manhattan prices. Other spas and beauty salons line 37th Avenue, offering hair and facial services, including Studio L.A. and Chic Style. The neighborhood is also home to the iconic Jackson Heights Post Office, a landmarked building with beautiful Art Deco details.

Easy commute close to major highways

The closest subway line to the complex is the elevated 7 train on 82nd Street. But there are five subway lines (E, F, M, R and 7) to choose from — including two express trains one stop away at Roosevelt Avenue. Commuters can easily get into midtown Manhattan in about 20 minutes by subway. The 7 line provides the additional benefit of getting to CitiField for Mets Baseball in about 10 minutes. Several bus lines serve Jackson Heights, including the Q32, Q33 and Q49, located just a block away from the Allendale and the Q70 Express to LaGuardia Airport. The Brooklyn Queens Expressway and Grand Central Parkway are nearby for travel in and out of Queens.
