One of a pair of towers on the upper Upper West Side
The 31-story Ariel West and its 37-floor cousin, Ariel East — both towers on either side of Broadway at West 99th Street — changed the face of the neighborhood when they went up in 2007. The buildings tower over the relatively low-rise area and were some of the first modern glass skyscrapers built in that part of the Upper West Side. “It’s kind of a village unto itself,” says Seth Levin, an agent with the LevinKong Team at Keller Williams NYC, who has listed units in the building. “The level of amenities, the level of service was not — and still isn’t — so prolific in that area. So it’s one of the true luxury, fully amenitized buildings in that neighborhood.” Designed by architecture firm Cook + Fox, Ariel West originally featured a glass-and-terracotta facade. However, the terracotta tiles were replaced with more durable aluminum around 2020. Its one-story entrance — closer to the scale of nearby townhouses — is along West 99th Street, away from the hustle and bustle of Broadway and leads to the building’s courtyard and other outdoor amenities. Its proximity to parks and private schools makes Ariel West “the epitome of a family building.
Central Park and Hudson River views
Ariel West remains one of the tallest buildings in the area, so residences on the upper floors have far-reaching views of the Hudson River, Central Park and city skyline. Of course, the tall ceilings and walls of glass don’t hurt either. When the building opened, the developer, Extell, offered three choices for the kitchen cabinetry, plus stone and hardwood flooring. “The storage is fantastic,” Levin says. “It was built with a really good closet allotment for each unit.” More than 15 years after opening, residents have changed things up to their liking, so finishes vary from unit to unit. Still, many of its 90 residences — ranging from two to five bedrooms — offer open living and dining areas with adjacent kitchens. A two-bedroom home costs around $1.8 million, while a four-bedroom on an upper level starts at about $4 million. Most of the building is owner-occupied, but those who choose to rent can expect to fetch close to $16,000 a month for a three-bedroom and closer to $20,000 for a five-bedroom residence.
Outdoor areas include a courtyard, playground and basketball court
A full-time doorman and a concierge staff the desk in the glass-enclosed lobby, which has a seating area and access to the basketball court and playground outside, plus the landscaped courtyard. Sporty types will appreciate the full gym, locker rooms, 51-foot indoor swimming pool and the scheduled fitness classes in the yoga studio. There’s also a children’s playroom, a theater and private storage. There’s also a party room with a grand piano, a media room and a catering kitchen at Ariel East. In addition, price points at Ariel West are lower than in other buildings with similar amenities, Levin notes. “This is also a value building where people can get bigger footprints and larger room proportions for less than they would otherwise unless they’re looking at much lower tier buildings.”
Prime park access with nearby shops and restaurants
Located on the Upper West Side, on the edge of Manhattan Valley, Ariel West offers prime park access and proximity to amenities like shops, restaurants and grocery stores. Riverside Park is two blocks from the building’s entrance, and there are soccer fields and the seasonal restaurant Ellington in the Park just north of West 99th Street. Go south a few blocks to find 10 clay tennis courts named after the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos, who was a regular. There’s a West Side Market on the corner of West 98th Street, and eateries along Broadway offer everything from donuts to dim sum. Smoke Jazz and Supper Club is a few blocks up on Broadway between West 105th and West 106th streets, with scheduled performances Wednesday through Sunday nights.
Three blocks from the express 2 and 3 trains
The building is just a few blocks from the express 2 and 3 trains at West 96th Street. The local 1 train also stops there, as well as at West 103rd. The M96 bus offers crosstown services via West 96th Street, and drivers can access the Henry Hudson Parkway at the end of the block.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
