Spacious apartments in a postwar building in eastern Queens
In a neighborhood of mid-rise buildings, Birchwood Towers, straddling the Queens neighborhoods of Forest Hills and Rego Park, stands out.
Standing 30 stories tall, the twin towers of the co-op are originally part of a three-building complex (the third tower is its own co-op). Built in an Art Moderne style with a curving facade, it features 498 living spaces and has a circular driveway with a fan-shaped awning leading to the lobby. Inside, a doorman greets visitors — just one of the many amenities that residents appreciate, says Cheryl Nicholas, an agent with Brown Harris Stevens.
“All of my clients speak about the service,” Nicholas says. That includes friendliness of the staff, who are always available to help, she adds. They remember tiny details about the families that live there and go out of their way to assist with everything from package deliveries to parking.
When it comes to choosing a place to live, eastern Queens is becoming a destination for condo and co-op hunters, according to the agent. That's because the prices are lower than Long Island City and Sunnyside. Residents will typically get larger living spaces for less money in areas such as Rego Park and Forest Hills than areas of Queens that are closer to Manhattan, Nicholas says.
“This area of Queens is very popular. The prices are more moderate,” Nicholas explains.
Also of note, Joey Ramone of the punk band The Ramones lived in the building when the band members were young, according to The New York Times. They attended Forest Hills High School nearby, of which the dynamic American folk music duo of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are also alum.
Views and value
This 1964 building features a curved façade of white brick, a trendy material used throughout New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. The co-op offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units. The smallest of the units starts at 650 square feet and the largest three-bedroom unit goes up to 1,600 square feet. An 815-square-foot one-bedroom apartment was listed in December 2024 at $315,000, while a two-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot residence was listed that same month at $429,000.
Units offer large windows that allow plenty of sunlight in and curved balconies, some of which have views of the Manhattan skyline, while others overlook Queens.
A feature common in several of the units is the parquet wood flooring. That was extremely popular in the 1960s when the tower was built but has recently come back in vogue with the revival of midcentury modern design. Newly remodeled units will feature wide plank flooring more common in current styles.
The condition of the units will often vary, with some units having more updated features than others. Several residences have stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors.
Galley kitchens in the units save space, with cabinetry on both sides. and lead to a dining space connected to a wide area for living space seating.
A full-service building with a roof deck
The cooperative has an outdoor heated pool, a fitness center, and a garden with lush landscaping. During the summer season, there are annual flower beds around the green hedges for six months of continuous color, including bright yellow marigolds and pink impatiens. It’s a haven for the gardener.
There is a sun deck that offers space to relax and soak in the rays and a private playground for children. A community room and a library offer additional space for social gatherings.
The garage offers indoor parking for residents and valet parking is available for visitors. The community room and a library.
Diverse community peaking in popularity
The immediate area around Birchwood Towers is mostly residential, although Long Island Jewish Forest Hills hospital is across the street from the complex. But eateries abound along Queens Boulevard, with many ethnic varieties to choose from, such as Lime and Salt Restaurant Bar, which serves Latin cuisine and is about a six-minute walk from the towers. Austin Street is a fun place to hang out, including Kuku Korean Cuisine for bulgogi Korean barbecue. There are also many American restaurants that dot the landscape of the neighborhood.
The Queens Center Shopping Mall, about a seven-minute drive, is filled with trendy stores like Zara and Steve Madden as well as traditional stores such as JCPenney for family shopping.
The popular mall is also a gathering spot for food and drink. BonChon is known for its double fried chicken, Gong Cha and Tiger Sugar offer up popular boba drinks, including mango milk slush, while Ice Queen serves up rolled ice cream.
For the nature lover, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is nearby with nature trails and green space. Yellowstone Municipal Park has a playground, basketball courts and a dog run.
Easy access
The Long Island Expressway and Grand Central Parkway are right near Birchwood Towers for easy access to Manhattan, Long Island or out of the region.
The 67 Avenue subway station, with the E, M and R lines, has trains going into Manhattan and other areas of the city. There’s also Forest Hills-71 Avenue station nearby with the E, F, M and R lines. Several bus lines, including?Q38, Q53-SBS, Q60 andQ88, connect residents to myriad areas of Queens and other parts of the city.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
