Classic prewar co-op with lots of architectural details and roomy units

Built in 1930, the six-story Fillmore Hall is officially part of the Jackson Heights Historic District. Designed by Edward Adelsohn in a neo-Romanesque style, the “H-shaped” Fillmore Hall is a hulking structure, broken up into smaller sections by courtyards and light courts (shafts designed to supply sunlight to interior units.) The building has multiple entrances, all of which are deeply set back from the street, with the main portal on 35th Avenue and secondary entrances on 83rd and 84th Streets. Neo-Romanesque features are found across the brick facade, especially at the main entrance which protrudes slightly from the building and is framed by a horizontal stone doorframe featuring floral details, stone urns, and a tile roof, all standing on a pair of twisted, engaged columns. Other entrances are less elaborate but feature Romanesque archways made of iron and glass on the building’s southern ends. Inside, a grand lobby has columns, textured stucco walls, thick wood beams, dark colored terrazzo flooring and a fireplace—it looks like it was plucked straight from a medieval storybook. According to the building’s website, residents use the large space for communal gatherings.

Nine-foot ceilings in studio to three-bedroom units

The 132 apartments in this co-op are large and feature nine-foot ceilings and windows that welcome natural light. Because of the multiple courtyards, residents enjoy views of the gardens down below or the landscaping that lines the building’s perimeter. A few apartments even have up to three exposures. Kitchens are normally eat-ins and are separate from living areas. One-bedrooms can get as large as 900 square feet and are priced as low as $300,000 for apartments needing extensive makeovers and as high as $450,000. Two-bedroom homes can be as much as 1,120 square feet and can fetch as much as $729,000 when fully renovated. The last three-bedroom unit sold was the largest in the building; it went for $950,000 in 2022.

Apart from the basics, Fillmore Hall has a music room and landscaped gardens

Fillmore Hall has a live-in super and two porters. Bicycle racks are available and storage units are located in the basement, but there is a waitlist. The pet friendly building sets itself apart from others with a library of communal books and magazines, and a soundproof music room in the basement, equipped with a piano. The music room sits across from the card-operated laundry room. And of course, what would an apartment house building in historic Jackson Heights be without a garden. Fillmore Hall’s grounds had a recent professional renovation, done by landscape architects Todd Rader and Amy Crews. They planted shrubs and trees all around the building and created a peaceful oasis within the central courtyard, adding a pergola and seating for residents.

An array of cultural offerings plus a Momo Crawl

Fillmore Hall is on the quieter end of its block. But with just half a block's walk, residents hit Jackson Heights’ bustling famous 37th Avenue, one of the strips where culturally specific clothing and food can be found. The New York Times calls Jackson Heights “the most culturally diverse neighborhood in New York, if not on the planet” because of this very area. “You gotta come out here,” says Eirik Gislason a Jackson Heights resident and real estate broker at Brown Harris Stevens. “It’s like the foodie capital of the world here.” Small shops, food trucks and street carts sell all manner of South Asian foods. The famous Diversity Plaza, a pedestrianized section in the commercial area’s western end, is a gathering spot for all types of neighborhood activities. “Every year the Tibetan student organization facilitates this amazing event called The Momo Crawl there,” says Gislason. Thousands come to taste a variety of heavy-skinned Tibetan dumplings with vegetables or chicken or beef or potato inside of them and declare a winner. Patel Brothers, a well-known South Asian grocery store chain, has their largest outpost on 74th Street. Shopping and commercial businesses on 82nd Street consist of mall brand stores like Banana Republic Factory, Foot Locker, and Old Navy; national banks and other retail chains like Target can be found there as well. More restaurants and retail can be found on Junction Boulevard which borders the commercial center’s eastern end. Tavers Park about a 10-minute walk north of the building, has sports courts and playgrounds and hosts a farmers’ market on every Sunday of the year.

Subway options and transportation options are nearby

The 7 train at the 82 St-Jackson Heights stop is the closest subway line to Fillmore Hall and takes residents to Manhattan’s Grand Central Station in about 30 minutes. Residents can transfer to the E, F, M or R, if need be, one stop over at the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave Station. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is about 10 minutes away. A half-hour ride along Northern Blvd and Queensboro Bridge leads to Manhattan. Driving to LaGuardia Airport takes all of 10 minutes.
