A Columbus Circle prewar condominium with a formal English garden
It's rare that a prewar building in New York City is a condominium, but that's indeed the case with Parc Vendome, which was built in 1904 and converted from a 575-unit apartment building into a condominium in 1983. The complex — consisting of four buildings with two towers on West 57th Street and two others on West 56th Street with 21 commercial spaces — was one of the largest conversions in Manhattan when it was completed, according to an article in The New York Times at the time. Instead of going the typical route to redevelop it as a co-op,- the sponsor, Parc Vendome Associates (with Gerald Guterman as principal), took the painfully slow approach to extensively improve the building and grounds: "Four rebuilt lobbies with marble floors, 72 totally relit corridors, an elaborate new security system, new carpeting, an elaborate formal English garden between the buildings and public spaces rebuilt and redecorated to look as though they belong in the castle of an English lord," according to the Times article. "A very wealthy one." ?The palatial pet-friendly complex features some original Neoclassical architectural details, a full-time uniformed staff and a prime location on the cusp of Columbus Circle and Hell's Kitchen — less than two blocks from Central Park and The Shops at Columbus Circle.
Gratuitously spacious floorplans with deep closets and salon-like foyers
"Every unit is huge," says Thomas McDonagh, sales and rental broker at the Parc Vendome, who has sold over 400 units over the past 35 years and lives in the building. "A typical Hell's Kitchen one-bedroom is 600 square feet. At Parc Vendome, a one-bedroom
The grandest listing in the building is arguably the former home of the late hairstyle stylist John Barrett. The lux penthouse is near his erstwhile salon at Bergdorf Goodman, where he became famous for creating "Bergdorf Blondes" and creating signature looks for celebrities like Princess Diana and Martha Stewart from 1996 to 2019. His apartment became his salon after he left the upscale department store and was featured in Architectural Digest. Following his death, the palatial dwelling gained a lot of media attention when it went on the market in February 2024. That's because the one-bedroom combined with a studio features a main bedroom with a custom dressing room, a guest suite, a living room with a built-in bookcase and a private terrace. It went on to sell for $1.9 million in May 2024, making it the most expensive one-bedroom in the building.
A full-service luxury building with a four large rooftop terraces
Parc Vendome is a full-service luxury condominium with a round-the-clock door attendant, daytime porters and a live-in resident manager. "The staff here has a kind of old-world charm," says McDonagh, referring to the white-glove service and the employees' traditional uniforms. "There is always someone waiting to open the door for you," he says, comparing the building to new developments, which typically have just one lobby attendant who greets residents only once they pass through the lobby. The four-building complex is organized around a central landscaped courtyard with an English tea garden, bistro-style seating and various lounge seating. The quadrangle is drowned in the sound of tree leaves rustling in the wind and water splashing in the monumental carved limestone water foundation; the ambiance sets a scene so serene that one forgets West 57th Street is just on the other side of the building. Featuring fantastic views of the Midtown Manhattan skyline, a rooftop terrace is outfitted with chaise lounges to take sun and plush seating for relaxing. Plus, the basements of each building are equipped with a designated bike room and private storage units for an additional monthly fee.
On the cusp of Columbus Circle and Hell’s Kitchen, two block from Central Park
The location of the condominium complex is situated between Midtown West and Hell's Kitchen, putting residents in the thick of some of Manhattan's most revered cultural institutions, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Museum of Modern Art and American Museum of Natural History. Meanwhile, something is to be said about living just two blocks from Central Park, near some of the most iconic westside spots, including Wollman Rink, Central Park Carousel and Sheep Meadow. Outdoor enthusiasts can travel three long avenues west to Hudson River Park and Hudson River Greenway to bike, run, speed walk or lounge on a grassy knoll. Grocery stores within a two- to four-block radius include Whole Foods in The Shops at Columbus Circle, Morton Williams at West 58th Street and Ninth Avenue and D'Agostino at 54th Street and 10th Avenue. Plus, the storefronts around the complex — including a UPS store, The Pet Market, Wistaria Nail Spa and Gotham City Barbar Shop — make everyday errands easy.
Two blocks from 59th Street-Columbus Circle station
Residents of the Parc Vendome complex can walk just two blocks north along Eighth Avenue to Broadway to 59th Street-Columbus Circle station. The major Upper West Side transit hub provides access to the A, C, B, D and 1 trains. Additionally, a Citi Bike docking station is nearby at West 56th Street and Eighth Avenue for local trips.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
