An accessibly priced co-op on a quiet Woodside block
Situated on a tree-shaded side street, Strathmore Arms finds itself in good company with wood-framed single-family homes with driveways, yellow brick duplexes with attached garages and a mixed bag of prewar and midcentury apartments. Completed in 1962, the seven-story building is clad in red bricks with white-framed aluminum casement windows; the facade features two blocks of balconies, creating a symmetrical geometry of three distinct sections. For those looking for good value in West Queens, the co-op offers multi-room apartments with low maintenance fees starting at $200,000.
Roomy midcentury layouts with deep closets
Eighty-two units across seven stories range from studios to two bedrooms. There are, however, a few three-bedroom combination units. The floor plans are generously proportioned with formal foyers, proper dining areas and living rooms starting at 12-by-20 feet. Unrenovated apartments highlight the minimal architecture, including wide plank hardwood flooring, matte white walls and thin white floor and window molding. Plus, about half of the units have a private balcony off the living room, averaging approximately five by 10 feet. Unit #3A, a 500-square-foot studio with a large l-shaped alcove that fits a queen-sized bed, sold for $205,000 in the last quarter of 2024. Apartment #2D, a 1,000-square-foot two-bedroom with seven closets, a private balcony and an open area encompassing a massive kitchen, dining room and grand room, sold for $480,000 in the last quarter of 2024. Perhaps the grandest listing, #4D/E, a 1,800-square-foot three-bedroom with a 20-by-8-foot terrace, three bathrooms and a 21-by-16-foot en-suite primary bedroom, sold for $570,000 in the last quarter of 2021.
Basic amenities and service
The elevator building has a live-in superintendent and part-time maintenance staff. Swathed in white terrazzo, the sun-lit lobby is outfitted with a few benches, green plants and mailboxes. Residents can find laundry facilities on the lower level with folding tables and wire basket carts. The same subterranean floor houses a bike storage room and personal storage lockers. Additionally, the building offers competitive monthly rates for indoor parking in the ground-floor garage adjacent to the lobby.
A cozy southeastern Queens enclave
Woodside is known for its slower pace of life and convenience. Given its proximity to Astoria and friendly neighbors on a first-name basis, the neighborhood feels uniquely suburban and urban, all at once. Along this particular stretch of Northern Boulevard, there’s a hubbub of more than a dozen big-name car dealerships and auto repair clinics like Jiffy Lube. Sporadically placed between car lots, the avenue is dotted with fast food drive-throughs, including Dunkin’, McDonald’s and Taco Bell. Inlaid along the residential side streets, one will see wood-framed single-family homes with driveways, brick-clad duplexes with attached garages and an assortment of prewar and midcentury apartment towers. Residents can shop at local grocery stores, including Bravo, H Mart and Patel Brothers.
It should be noted that the Sunnyside Yard & Facility, which services Amtrak and NJ Transit trains, is a mile west of the co-op. Given the distance, residents won’t hear the maintenance or vibrations from the trains. However, fumes and emissions may affect the air quality.
Walking distance to multiple modes of transit
Door to turnstile, the nearest subway station, Northern Boulevard, is a ten-walk on Broadway from Strathmore Arms; it services the R and M trains. Similarly, there’s an equal walking distance to the LIRR station, Woodside, which provides train service to Grand Central Station in 20 minutes. Meanwhile, nearby thoroughfares, the BQE, Grand Central Parkway and Roosevelt Parkway, make driving through the boroughs manageable.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
