Flushing’s Tangram House West offers calm and convenience
A tangram is a Chinese puzzle where each piece must fit perfectly within a certain space without overlapping. Tangram House West, a 16-story residential tower that opened in 2022 in Flushing, Queens, is part of a complex based on the game’s concept. Developer F&T Group fit together two residential towers (Tangram House South opened in 2019), the Renaissance New York Flushing Hotel and an office building around a central courtyard. All that sits on a two-story underground mall that draws light from a dome that pops up in Tangram’s central green space. “Many of the residences look down on the dome and courtyard,” according to Eunice Chen, an agent who has worked with the Tangram team since sales began in 2017. “People love the location — the subway is only a block away — and the quality of the building.” The complex also offers a retreat from the teeming streets of Flushing, which holds New York City’s biggest Chinatown. Designed by architect Jean-Gabriel Neukomm, Tangram House West has views of the East River and Flushing Bay, and because it’s across the water from LaGuardia Airport, those vistas are protected. That also means residents see and hear nearby aircraft, but the soundproof windows eliminate the noise once inside the building. The residential towers share a collection of amenities, including an indoor pool and hot tub, a tennis court and the Pavilion, a slanting one-story structure with courtyard views, a lounge and a kitchen.
From fully furnished studios to penthouses with city views
Tangram House West features about 132 units, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. “They have nice square layouts with spacious kitchens,” Chen says, noting their custom Italian cabinetry from Doimo. The developers looked to maximize space in the units, so “everywhere we could put storage, we did,” the agent adds. “People always need more.” The glass facade makes for floor-to-ceiling windows that let light and air in, and most larger-sized units feature balconies. Only a few turnkey studios remain as of the fourth quarter of 2024. Costing as much as $750,000, these units come with built-in desks and shelving, a Murphy bed and a hidden dining room table and four chairs. One-bedrooms range from $800,000 to $900,000, while two-bedrooms start around $1.25 million. A three-bedroom penthouse with views of Manhattan costs as much as $3.2 million. Tangram was one of the last buildings awarded a tax abatement in the late 2010s, and residents have about 10 more years of tax savings left.
Wellness center and relaxation areas with courtyard views
The complex’s curated suite of amenities, designed by Neukomm, starts with the landscaped courtyard at its heart, complete with walking paths, benches and terraces, plus a dog run. The wellness center includes a wraparound gym with a salt room, sauna and steam room, studio space for yoga or Pilates, a full-size tennis court and a pool and hot tub. In addition to the Pavilion, there’s another lounge with a fireplace, a catering kitchen and an adjacent business center with a long table that could be used as a dining room. Children have a dedicated playroom with an activity area, oversized stuffed animals and seating for weary caregivers. Next door, the hotel offers a steakhouse with a sake and whiskey bar, Prime Met Steakhouse, plus sweeping views of Manhattan. There’s also a parking garage for guests and residents. “It’s a convenient lifestyle,” Chen notes.
Perched atop a two-story shopping center with an arcade and cinema
Living on top of a shopping mall — which residents enter the mall through a hidden hallway with key fob access — has its advantages. There’s the food court, where families can gather for Asian-inspired ice cream flavors at Soft Swerve, or teens can gossip over bubble milk tea from I’Milky. The Regal movie theater offers both Chinese- and English-language films, and gamers will gravitate toward Gatcha, the 9,000-square-foot arcade. Le Chien Bleu Pup-Up Shop offers accessories for well-heeled hounds, and Goldfish Swim School lets parents watch their children’s lessons through glass walls. “Travel time is a big chunk of people’s lives,” Chen notes. “It’s so nice to have it all right here.” Sit-down restaurants include Hoi Polloi, a fusion restaurant and grill with a happy hour, or Kura Revolving Sushi Bar. And given Flushing’s reputation as a dining destination, many may be pleased to learn the mall also has an Orangetheory Fitness.
Flushing is for foodies
Asian food lovers from all over New York regularly flock to Flushing. “There are so many places; it’s a foodie hot spot,” Chen says. Cantonese dim sum at Asian Jewels, Maxi’s Noodle and Chongqing Lao Zao, a hot pot spot, are all on Eater’s Best of Flushing list published in May 2024. Markets, shops and stands are crowded on the neighborhood streets, or residents can get in a game of handball at the James A. Bland Playground, about three blocks from Tangram. Flushing Meadows Corona Park, with close to 900 acres of activities, is about 20 minutes on foot. Citi Field, home of the Mets, is about a 10-minute subway ride. Beyond the independent markets, there’s also a Stop & Shop several blocks north — it’s about a six-minute drive or a 20-minute walk.
Only about 40 minutes to Midtown Manhattan on the 7 train
The 7 train stops about a block away at Flushing-Main Street, one of New York’s busiest subway stations. It’s about a 40-minute trip into Midtown Manhattan. The Long Island Rail Road is also a short walk from the building, getting passengers to Midtown in about 25 minutes. The Whitestone Expressway, I-678 and New York State Route 25A are all nearby options for drivers.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
