The quintessential garden apartment community. That is what The Berkeley represents in Jackson Heights — a community known for its garden apartments.
The Berkeley, which includes three mid-rise buildings spread out over half a block and connected by an interior garden, stands out for its pristine maintenance of its grounds. The communal area that connects the three buildings that make up the co-op is an oasis in a bustling urban neighborhood. Tucked behind the buildings, it’s the property’s main attraction, according to Vlad Simkhovich, broker owner of Jackson Heights Properties.
“You feel like you’re far away from the city. It’s so quiet,” the agent says.
Built in 1937, there are 288 units?within the complex. Designed in neo-Georgian style by architect Joshua Tabatchnik, each of the buildings stands six-stories tall. The prolific architect was responsible for many of the prewar buildings in the historic district.
“It is considered one of the premier buildings in Jackson Heights,” Simkhovich explains.
Brick exteriors in a tree-lined neighborhood
Recent listings at The Berkeley include a 750-square-foot, one-bedroom at 35-25 77th St. at $459,000 and a one-bedroom at 684 square-foot unit at 77-12 35th Ave for $465,000. All three buildings have stately brick exteriors and an elevator for each wing. Each of the lobbies maintain the elegance of yesteryear, with moldings and marble flooring. The common garden space is a place to relax, with daylilies in different hues in the late spring season and yellow rudbeckias throughout the summer season. There is one common event room for the tenants of all three buildings to use, laundry facilities in each building and full-time maintenance staff. The buildings are in a neighborhood with tree-lined sidewalks amid other stately apartment buildings and homes. Jackson Heights was built as a garden community as New Yorkers sought green space in the early 1900s and named after John C. Jackson, a wealthy landowner.
Prewar charm
The interior of the apartments at The Berkeley feature all the charm of prewar buildings, Simkhovich says. Arch doorways highlight the space with hardwood flooring. The units have built-ins and moldings found in construction of that era. The tradeoff is that the closets are smaller than the newer buildings.
Diverse cuisines and shopping
Jackson Heights is one of New York’s most diverse communities with more than 150 different languages spoken by neighborhood residents. Arepa Lady on 37th Avenue and 77th Street is a neighborhood staple with delicious Colombian breakfasts and fruit shakes. On 37th Avenue and 81st Street is Jahn’s, a stalwart of a diner and ice cream parlor that has served Jackson Heights for more than six decades. It’s where friends and family gather for weekend brunch or where local Little Leagues go after a game to celebrate with ice cream. This is the last remaining Jahn’s, which once had almost 30 locations in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Founded in 1897, it’s known for its Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae with over a dozen scoops of ice cream. South Asian and Central American eateries abound on 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue. The Jackson Heights farmers market at Travers Park at 76th Street and 34th Avenue operates on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering produce, baked goods and other treats. Supermarkets within walking distance of The Berkeley include Ferreira Foodtown at 76th Street and 37th Avenue. Right near the complex is the iconic Jackson Heights Post Office, a landmarked building with beautiful Art Deco details.
Convenient location close to Manhattan
Getting around is a breeze as there are five subway lines (E, F, M, R and 7) to choose from — including two express trains at Roosevelt Avenue. Commuters can easily get into midtown Manhattan in 20 minutes by subway, which is why people are attracted to the neighborhood, Simkhovich says. The 7 line elevated train provides the additional benefit of getting to CitiField for Mets Baseball in about 10 minutes and to Flushing, one of the largest East Asian centers of commerce in the country. The Q 33 and Q 47 bus lines are near the complex along with the Q70 Express to LaGuardia Airport. The Brooklyn Queens Expressway and Grand Central Parkway are nearby for travel in and out of Queens.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
