A smaller, post-war building, providing full-service in a laid back Riverdale location
Images of single-family homes and grand mansions nestled in bucolic parks may be what most imagine whenever the Bronx’s Riverdale is mentioned. But the hilly, waterfront neighborhood’s housing stock is much more diverse than the average New Yorker may think. Several multi-family homes are located within the area and The Imperial Apartments, off the Henry Hudson Parkway, is one of them. Built in 1961, the 12-story red-brick co-op is situated in a fully residential section of Central Riverdale. “The appeal is the location,” says Deena Spindler, a Brown Harris Stevens agent who knows Riverdale like the back of her hand. “It happens to be on a corner, right on the highway. It is literally the center of Riverdale. And it's located on the west side of Henry Hudson Parkway, which is the slightly more desirable side because it's less congested and it's only zoned for residential.” A short walk over the Parkway’s bridge exits into the core of Riverdale where all the shops, banks, and grocery stores are located. “We don't have a lot of shopping,” Spindler says. “It's a little sleepy town but you have everything you need there.” Parents are also attracted to the area because of the proximity of some of the city’s most prestigious private schools like Horace Mann School and Riverdale Country Day School, in addition to great public schools. Although the building is considered to be on the smaller side, The Imperial’s 92 units are generously laid out and full service is offered to tenants. “For that type of building,” Spindler says, “they really offer a lot.”
Spacious two- and three-bedrooms dominate, starting at $510,000
Very few one bedrooms exist at The Imperial, with two- and three-bedroom units making up the majority of stock, along with at least five four-bedrooms. Some combos do exist and Spindler says the board allowed the first duplex to be built about two years ago. Apartments here are generously-sized and kitchens are very large. There are also ample built-in closets and open living areas in most apartments. Two-bedroom units hover around 1,200 square feet and can start at $289,000. A fully renovated, 1,300-square-foot two-bedroom with white interiors, went for as much as $575,000 in the fall of 2024. Three-bedroom units generally range from 1330 to 1450 square feet and can command between $510,000 to $735,000. As is expected for a decades-old building, residences are at varying stages of renovation, but regardless of the timing of their last upgrade, apartments are generally well-kept.
A full-service building with an automatic elevator
Despite being a building with under 100 units, The Imperial offers its residents a lot. The front desk is full-service with a 24-hour doorman, and there is also a resident super, a porter, and a package room. The board employs Garth Chester Management to oversee the property which is usually kept in pristine condition. In-unit laundry is allowed although a laundry room exists in the basement. There is also a library, a conference room, and a gym. “Most of the buildings in Riverdale do not have a gym,” says Spindler. There are two elevators and one is automatically programmed on the weekend for Sabbath-observant residents. A well-stocked children’s playroom exists as well as an outdoor play area. During the warmer months, residents socialize on the large deck above the in-house garage which gets furnished with lounge chairs and tables. Valet service is available and there is a bicycle room. Spindler mentions that “there's a very conscientious board which can make or break a building.” Pets are allowed but no dogs.
Only the necessities are close by, but parks are plentiful
The Imperial Apartments are located on the fully residential west side of the Henry Hudson which means travel over to the east side is a must. A five-minute walk over a very pedestrian-friendly bridge spills into Central Riverdale’s core where everyday convenience stores like a local pharmacy, dry cleaners, and local restaurants can be found. There is also a Key Foods, a Starbucks, and Taco Bell but not much else by way of chain stores. Wave Hill Public Garden and Cultural Center — a 28-acre plot with several specialty gardens and arts programming — is located just a three-minute drive up the Henry Hudson Parkway. Right before Wave Hill is Riverdale Park where hiking trails are part of the landscape. A six-minute drive east, leads to Van Cortlandt Park — New York City’s third largest Park — where the stadium, numerous ball fields, golf courses, and tennis courts are located. About four minutes of driving further afield, leads to an area with a BJ’s Buffalo, Wild Wings and Petco, among other stores.
A short drive to the parkway plus connecting buses to almost anywhere stop across the street
Since the Henry Hudson Parkway is only a few feet away, it takes about less than two minutes to get to. Train stations are a bit far off, but connecting buses save the commute. “At the corner, across the street, is every bus you could want,” Spindler says. “The local city buses, the express buses to the city, and the little van that takes you to the Metro North train. You're never walking more than a block or two to go anywhere.” Express Manhattan buses ride into the eastside (BxM1), westside (BxM2), and Wall Street (BxM18). The Spuyten Duyval train gets to Grand Central in about 28 minutes.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
