Lenox Hill condo with glass-covered entry and an array of amenities
At The Oxford on 72nd Street, residents walk a runway every day. That’s because the 44-story tower in the Upper East Side’s Lenox Hill neighborhood is set back from the street and has a long glass-covered awning between the street and the lobby. Beginning just inches from the curb, residents can go from a taxi to the runway — protected from the elements — immediately. When it’s time to go out again, there’s a buffer before they hit the street. “You don’t have to walk right out into foot traffic,” according to Richard Pino, an associate broker and the chief financial officer of the real estate agency New York Residence. The runway extends inside to the marble lobby, where a full staff is ready to assist.
Emery Roth and Sons — a now-defunct firm helmed by one of New York’s most revered architects of the early 20th century and his adult children — completed the building in 1990. The white-glove condo has a full suite of amenities (pickleball, anyone?) and spacious layouts, many with outdoor space that overlooks the East River and city skyline.
Terraces and walls of windows make for airy, light-filled residences
The Oxford’s 191 residences range from one- to five-bedrooms, although the majority of units are on the larger end of the spectrum. Original layouts included hardwood floors, walls of windows and significant closet space. Residences have been updated over the life of the building, so finishes differ between the units.
In the third quarter of 2024, only a handful of residences were available for sale, including a 35th-floor two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home represented by Pino. It has a spacious terrace, floor-to-ceiling windows and built-ins galore, from the cabinetry lining the living room to bunk beds in the secondary bedroom. A one-bedroom sold in early 2024 for just under $900,000, while a three-bedroom ranges from around $2.5 million to $4.2 million. A four-bedroom in need of a makeover can be had for about $3.25 million, but a newly renovated abode on a high floor and multiple terraces can command closer to $7.5 million.
Second-floor amenities include a pool and a sports court
Well-maintained plantings and built-in benches surround the tower, and its T-shaped lobby was gut renovated in 2018 by the design firm BG Studio International. The floors are made from slabs of striped Polar Gray marble, while the walls, also striped, were finished in brown-and-dark gray San Penia marble, according to a 2018 article in BrickUnderground. “We were looking for something delicate,” Francesca Bucci, president and founder of BG Studio International, said in the story. The Oxford also has a robust set of amenities on the second floor, starting with an indoor pool. With a glass ceiling and walls of windows, it’s almost like swimming in a solarium. There’s also a shower for a post-swim rinse, as well as access to the sauna and locker rooms. A wraparound terrace surrounds the pool room, providing a dining area and barbecues on the east side, lounge chairs in the middle and a childrens’ space with a play structure on the west side. On a recent visit to the building, several kids were having a pizza party at the picnic tables on the terrace. A sports court is next to the playground, and can be set up for pickle ball or basketball. (Pickleball players can find a partner via the building’s app.) There’s also a studio with a small kitchen that can be reserved for events, a gym and a weight room. There’s always an attendant manning the desk in the lobby, and other staff includes a resident manager, porters and concierge staff who organize wine tastings and other social events.
Walkable to bars, restaurants and Sotheby’s New York
“I love the Upper East Side. There are so many restaurants and bars. And you establish relationships with the local vendors,” says Pino, who lives two blocks from the building and notes he knows many of the people working behind the counters. “You can’t get that from a big box store.” Indeed, First Avenue offers coffee shops and fast casual restaurants, and a Morton Williams Supermarket is less than a block from The Oxford. Pubs and other eateries — including Georgian, Czech and Sichuan cuisines, among others — can be found on the side streets. York Avenue is lined with businesses, including several doctors and medical offices associated with NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, located at York Avenue and East 70th Street. The East River is two blocks from the building, and the John Finley Walk starts at around East 72nd Street. John Jay Park, which has an outdoor pool and playground, is on the river between East 76th and East 78th streets. Sotheby’s New York — an outpost of the international auction house where soon-to-be-sold items are exhibited, from Chinese art to NBA memorabilia to important jewels and handbags — is also around the corner on York Avenue. “I always tell people, ‘Sotheby’s is your museum,’” Pino says. “Someone will buy it and it will end up in a museum or their private collection. Why not go look while it’s on display right here?”
Blocks from the FDR and the Q train
The closest subway station is about a five-minute walk at Second Avenue and East 72nd Street, offering Q train service. The M72 bus provides crosstown transportation. Drivers can easily access the FDR, which is just two blocks away. There is a parking garage adjacent to the building.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
