Known as The Savoy, 3635 Johnson Avenue is a midrise co-op in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The exterior features midcentury aesthetics, with steps leading up to the six-story brick building flanked by wrought iron railings. Built in 1954, there are 82 units in the co-op.
The Savoy offers a range of residence sizes, from studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms to three-bedrooms. Prices will vary depending on upgrades and amenities inside the units. Some recently sold units include a two-bedroom, two-bathroom residence for $420,000 and a studio for $230,000.
The studio apartments are about 800-square-feet. One-bedroom units range from 700 to 900-square-feet and two-bedroom residences are between 900 and 1,250-square-feet. Some of the two-bedroom units come with unique features such as sunken living rooms or terraces. The units with terraces have higher price tags. The largest units are the three-bedroom residences, which range from 1,200 to 1,400-square-feet, some with terraces and upgraded amenities such as stainless steel appliances and subway tiles in kitchens.
Amenities and beyond
A modern lobby greets visitors at The Savoy. Brick walls with colorful paintings add to the aesthetic appeal of the common area with seating and benches. A laundry facility is on site and there is additional storage space for residents, including bike storage. The building has a private outdoor garden and a community room for social gatherings. A live-in superintendent is on site and there is private parking available with a waitlist. There is an elevator in the building.
Riverdale is popular with co-op and condo buyers due to the price point, says Sanjya Tidke, team leader at Brown Harris Stevens and a Riverdale resident. The blend of suburban and urban living makes it attractive to home buyers.
“People want a little bit of Westchester style plus the city,” she says.
People shopping for co-ops in Riverdale typically check out both The Savoy and The Tudor, a co-op on the same street at 3601 Johnson Ave., Tidke says.
Interior details
The units are bright and airy with plenty of sunlight due to the large windows. Hardwood flooring is found throughout the space. As this is a postwar building, there are fewer architectural details. The tradeoff is that the closet sizes are larger, and the bathrooms are newer.
Of the two buildings, The Savoy and The Tudor, The Savoy has a larger layout, Tidke says.
Green spaces and ethnic eats
Riverdale is a hidden gem in New York City, says Geoffrey Weiss, licensed associate real estate broker at Compass and a Riverdale resident. The value is in the pricing, he says. People who are being priced out of Manhattan and areas of Brooklyn are looking to Riverdale as an alternative with great dining and shopping, he says.
“It’s a really great value for your money,” Weiss says.
A two-bedroom co-op would typically cost $350,000 to $400,000 in central Riverdale, Weiss says. But the co-ops in that price range will not have door attendants or gyms, he adds.
People are drawn to Riverdale for the green space, Weiss says. Residents of Riverdale are close to Seton Park and Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center.
There are also many ethnic eateries such as El Tina Riverdale Restaurant and Lech y Miel Restaurant.
For shopping, there’s Riverdale Crossing anchored by BJ’s Wholesale Club for groceries and The Shops at Marble Hill with Target and Marshalls.
Transportation options
Riverdale is served by Metro-North and the subway for travel to Manhattan.
The Metro-North's Hudson Line at Marble Hill Station stops at Grand Central Station midtown.
The 238 Street station offers the 1 subway line connecting to the west side of Manhattan. The bus line Bx10 runs through Riverdale on West 231 Street.
Major highways include the Henry Hudson Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway are nearby for travel in and out of the Bronx.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
