Dawson, the seat of Terrell County, is a small town that serves nearby rural communities like Sasser, Bronwood and Parrott, even as its own population of about 4,000 slowly declines. Downtown has its share of vacant storefronts, but red-brick buildings, historic homes and colorful murals give the area character. Many structures were built with brick made from Georgia soil, including the striking High Victorian-style Terrell County Courthouse with its silver domes. Outside the town center, roads wind through dense woods to houses on large lots, while neighborhoods in town offer early-1900s houses alongside newer builds on compact lots. Dawson is connected to Albany, Columbus and surrounding towns by U.S. Route 82 and Georgia State Route 520, which also host fast-food spots and everyday shopping, including dollar stores. Local life spreads across mom-and-pop restaurants, a small theater, museum, country club and nearby quail hunting grounds. While the city works through infrastructure challenges under state oversight, growth in neighboring Lee County may eventually bring new attention to Dawson.
