Lavallette, New Jersey is a small borough on the Barnegat Peninsula that functions as both a popular summer resort town and a year-round community of about 2,000 residents. The setting is distinctly coastal, with two shorelines: quiet Atlantic Ocean beaches on one side and Barnegat Bay on the other. The beaches are intentionally low-key, with surfing and fishing limited to certain sections and a boardwalk without commercial businesses, so walks are focused on the water and views rather than shops. Seasonal attractions include movies on the beach or bay and a well-attended fireworks display. On the bay side, several public boat ramps make it straightforward to get out on the water for fishing or recreation, and Hankins Park adds a bayfront playground, basketball and tennis courts, and a gazebo that many residents use for sunset views. Housing ranges from mid-century condos and classic cottages and beach bungalows to newer townhouses and recent ocean-block construction, with many oceanfront homes raised on higher foundations as a practical response to hurricane risk. Grand Central Avenue is the main commercial strip, with ice cream shops, casual restaurants, long-running seafood spots, seasonal donut shops, and produce stands, while nearby Seaside Heights supplies a larger grocery store. Younger students attend Lavallette Elementary School, and high schoolers go to the highly rated Point Pleasant Beach High School, which draws teens from several shore communities and is known for strong athletics.
